Question Noveske lower + Magpul PMAg = Slap Happy

I recently completed my build...although technically I didn't build it since I had an armorer at the gun show put the lower together.

Long story short...I have a Noveske lower with DPMS internals. When I insert a PMAG, it will slide in smoothly but to seat it I have to seriously slap the crap out of the bottom or else it won't seat properly and will fall out (I always give the mags a little slap anyway but this is quite a bit more forceful). I don't have any standard GI mags lying around to compare with.

Question is this...while the armorer was putting the lower together he made a weird comment as he was putting the magazine catch together. He said something like "this spring is almost too short, but I think it will work". it happens with both PMAGs I purchased. I plan on picking up a couple of standard GI mags this week and testing. does anyone believe it to be the springs fault, or has anything similar happened to others on the forum?

How many rounds are you loading into the PMAG? Check and count to mare sure it is ONLY 30.

PMAGs are designed to work with 30 rounds but they will actually let you load 31. However then they are very difficult to seat properly. I have seen a few folks make this mistake. Make sure the last round loaded sits on the right hand side side of the mag and that you can still press down about 1/4 inch on the stack of rounds in a full mag.

    .

On a quiet quiet night, if you listen very carefully, you might be able to hear that lower dry-heaving....

I would think that a short spring could maybe not be snapping the catch into place on the mag.
Press the Mag Release, is it soft feeling or does it have some good resistance?
If you press it all the way down and release it real slow, does it come all the way back out? or do you have to work it back out?

Easy enough to buy another spring and change it out. Probably the easiest spring to change.

    But maybe it's just me...

Are you loading it with the bolt closed?

My point exactly, to each their own though.

    Portland Expo Center?

If the guy that was putting the lower together said he was worried about the spring being too short, then it might not have enough tension to pull the magazine catch back to the right.

I'd just buy a new spring and be done with it.

There's some good tension when pushing the mag release, and the lower is pretty well lubricated, but I'm thing replacing the spring is the best route to go at this point.

Loading with the bolt closed and reloading with the bolt to the rear

I was loading 26-28 rounds in each mag...which brings me to another question. Magpul's PMAG info sheet states that loading and storing mags loaded to 30 rounds will not damage the spring or the lips of the magazine. I was always taught with metal mags to not do this since it can slowly bend the lips outward and the rounds will not feed correctly. Has anyone or does anyone here top off their PMAGs with 30 rounds, and have you had any issues with it?

After you load the 30, put on the impact/dust cover.

I bet the problem is not with the spring, but rather with either the mag or the mag catch. DPMS is not known for putting out a quality product of any kind.

If the lower works ok with GI mags but not your PMags, you will be able to remedy the issue with a nail file and 30 seconds of your time.

As far as storing filled magazines: I have a windowed Gen 1 PMag I got about 2 months after PMags were released (over 3 years ago) that has been sitting with 30 rounds since a few days after I bought it. Every six months or so I insert it into one of my AR's to make sure it hasn't spread excessively to impede function. No issues. The PMag polymer won't dent or take a set like GI aluminum mags, one of the reasons I like them: I don't have to wonder if the feedlip was bent, on a PMag it will simply be broken (and even then it will usually still work if it has to, at least for a while).
