    I've done a ton of research on Ionbond in the past and a huge problem is their turn around, due to how they will only do a batch at a time, prep work, disassembly etc... I'd love having my BCM BCG Ionbonded as it will absorb much more oil than parkerizing and the finish itself is super slick. My old Ionbonded Les Baer is still the slickest firearm I've handled to this day

    I have the BCM Ion-Bond in my RR M16. It may not be necessary, but I like the added margin of lubricity it gives. All my AR's have regular parked BCG's and I have no issues with them either.

    The W DLC vapor deposition coating is from 5 to 8 microns thick. It will not have an effect on headspacing.

    It's better than manganese or zinc phosphate; much harder and with much better lubricity but the rough surface finish of the phosphated coatings DO hold oil.

    Actually, the vapor deposition coatings do NOT absorb oil. The surface roughness is really the surface roughness of the coated material. I worked with Ionbond getting renowned 1911 pistolsmiths involved to streamline things for them. I think it was successful. All of my 1911s are thusly coated. I'm now considering Melonite with W DLC on top on another Springfield TRP or Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special.

    I've owned one 1911 that I had treated with Melonite, and then IONBond. It was the bomb...rugged and beautiful, very slick and required next to no lube. Cost prohibitive at the time - about $400 - but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

    Very happy with my NiB Bolt Carrier as well, though...wouldn't see the specific need to try an IONBond on again, as I've had both, and the NiB Failzero carrier groups are readily available.

    I made a far too general of a statement and confused another concept.

    PVD coatings are termed "columnar" which implies that it is laid in a columnar fashion - think of standing pegs. The small pores will accep some oil and surface tension will hold it. Keep that thought.

    IonBond lays 2 to 3 microns of electroless Ni then the W DLC. The thin Ni barrier assists corrosion resistance. Without the sub-layer the "pores" have direct contact with the air - and the substrate material will corrode.

    One company had a patent for parkerizing over their PVD coating to fill the pores.

    So, long story short - you're correct.
