I have two POF Predator Rails that are 14" rails. they are the older style rail that mounts on a Flat top receiver. I am currently using on on a custome heavy weight build with a 22" barrel. I do not have iron sights on it, so wanted to cover the GB. I have not decided what I am doing with the other one yet.

You also help balancing by adding a heavier buttstock to the rifle (like many, myself included, do with guns with suppressors hanging off the end of them). Balance is more important than overall weight IMO; don't get me wrong, weight still matters.

I'm going with a 15" Troy tube on my 18" SPR; mainly so I can set the bipod out far enough to be useful. The only OTHER thing going on it after the scope, are BUIS and maybe an old style web sling, for totin' purposes.

Keep in mind that while TRX-Xtreme and similar rails are lighter they don't dissipate heat well. They get very hot, very quickly if you're doing any serious shooting.

A DD Lite rail only weighs about 2.5 oz more than the TRX Extreme.

I know I like my TRX extreme a lot. I have not had it heat up too bad. But, I don't dump mag after mag through mine.

Back to topic: 12 and 13 inch rails are long enough for me to mount a light at 10:30 or 1:30 and a front sight without compromising my grip. Any longer and I don't think the weight is worth the length for my use.

Don't forget that you can gain a lot of length by simply extending the stock if you have to pull your grip back due to FSP or 12:00 lasers.
This is the reason I sold my LW URX II. Nice enough rail but at he time I saw no solid way of mounting rail covers and decided the heat it would generate wasn't worth it.

My first choice in rails now is the DD RIS II's. Thick and sturdy and the 12" model has enough room for everything I need while still offering enough space for my hand. The 9.5" mk18 model actualy works ok for me, but the 12" is just right with a light, laser and vert grip.

I thought the mid length URX II (10.75", or close to that) on my SR15's would be enough but the shape of the top rail and it's integrated sight give me less options than I'd like.

For a while there I thought lightweight was the most important thing. I quickly learned it's not as important as overall comfort and consistency. I'd rather better mounting options and less heat than 4 less ounces.

I run a 12" Troy TRX extreme on my 16" barrel and its just about the right length. It doesn't make it too heavy. If its too front heavy for you put a heavier buttstock on it.

I noticed the heat earlier today on my 13" trx extreme, it does heat up but it wasnt too hot after a few mags but of course the 105 degree weather never helps

That being said i love the rail and it'll take alot to switch me away from it.

The weight difference is a little bit more than that. A 14" DD to a 13" extreme is around 5.5-6 ozs based on published weights. A 12" DD LR to a 13" extreme is around 3.5 to 4 oz. If you stick lots of rail pieces on your TRX the difference will be smaller. But if you start sticking rail covers on your DD LR you will boost the difference up again.

The DD LR is a really nicely made piece of genius though and I have used several of them.

The TRX Extreme on my carbine does not get terribly hot even with serious shooting. However, I am not just doing mag dumps and am not doing F/A. But a lot of fast shooting etc.
