Getting rid of the FSB for some folding BUIS question

I have the Magpul MOE Handgaurds with the stock FSB and the handgaurd caps on the FSB and delta ring. I'd like to get rid of the FSB to install a gas block with rails for the BUIS. My problem is finding one with the handgaurd endcaps. So am I pretty much stuck using the stock FSB or switching to a FF rails system?

The handguard cap is not attached to the FSB. You should be able to mount it behind the gasblock of your choice.
Quick question if you dont mind... Why switch to a railed gasblock/front BUIS combo?

Well, with the Magpul MOE handgaurd, I don't like how high the BUIS would sit if I were to place it on top of the handgaurd with their rail attachments. I figured if I could get a railed gasblock I could then install the BUIS and leave the handgaurd.

It's not that I don't like the FSB. I don't know, maybe it is that I just don't like it. It's just not working for me.

Just curious - how is the standard FSB not working for you? Is it interfering with optics use? You don't like the sight picture?

Personally, i would not mount any type of sighting gear on a standard-type handgaurd; MOE or otherwise.

You nailed it!! I knew it was something specific, but I just couldn't place my finger on it. I'd never place sites on a standard handgaurd, but I'm not convinced to go trash my MOE yet. I want folding sites. Not cause it's in my sight picture cause all I shoot is open sites, but because I'm still using my A2 carry handle sight. I'd like to have matching sights. I'm pretty ocd about things being symmetrical, matching, etc.

I see. Hmmmm... OCD is a bitch...

If wanting to go from fixed sights (standard FSB, and I'll guess a removable carry handle?) to a matched set of flip sights, you have a few options:

    1) Remove the standard FSB and replace it with a railed gas block onto which you can attach your choice of front flip sight (make sure you get an appropraite height sight for your railed gas block).

    2) Remove the standard FSB and replace it with your choice of gas block with integrated flip sight. I believe all known flip sight gas block thingies have a matching detatchable rear sight, but don't quote me on that.

    3) Replace your exsisting barrel with one configured with a delta ring assembly, HG end cap, and railed gas block or flip sight gas block of your choice. This way to can use your MOE handguards, but can always revert back to your original barrel when you go on a fixed sight kick. You could sell your take-off barrel to help fund your project. Better yet, you can keep your take-off barrel for use on a future build project.

    4) Replace your existing upper with one configured to your liking. Sell your standard FSB upper, or keep it as an extra/start of a second rifle.

If you're not married to your MOE handguards, you could always chop the FSB and install an extended FF handguard and flip sight of your choice.

The options listed above are just what I could work out in my pea brain at the moment. There may be more ways to achieve your desired result. Good luck, and have fun with your quest. Keep that OCD in check, too. Remember: You are the boss of you. Or, if you're married: You're wife is the boss of you and your OCD.

FWIW, all of my ARs except my "long range" Recce build have FSBs. I prefer it over any BUIS on the market even Troys. KISS.

I really don't understand what you're trying to do, or what you think you'll be gaining, by getting a flip up front sight? Especially if you're using the A2 rear?
Why do the loudest do the least?

I want the low profile of the flip-up BUIS, but I also love the MOE hand guard. I just don't want to get rid of the MOE for a FF Rail yet. AND I don't want to get a pair of BUIS and only install the rear ones. I'm sure it's fine to use the stock FSB, but having the flip up rear with the non-flip up FSB would seriously mess with me at night.

I would leave it alone especially if all you shoot is irons. Every reputable manufacturer, as far as I know, manufactures a carbine in the fixed FSB/folding rear configuration. Not to mention that an untold number of competition shooters, instructors, and the US Military also use that configuration with success. Anyways, thats just my thoughts. Good luck!

    Thanks

I'll keep it in mind. As I am signing my Army papers Thursday. I will most likely end up scraping this whole project anyways.
