I tell the dipsticks that mention firing pin filing that you have to take exactly .275" off the tip to get full auto. I figure that sounds more "scientific" and hence believable. I keep hoping to see the results at the range someday

Myths that are like fingernails on a chalkboard to me:
5.56x45 and .223 are the same thing, no difference at all.

Bushmaster and DPMS make M16s for the military.

Parts is parts, you're just paying for the name with Colt.

5.56 ammo was purposely designed to wound, not kill.

You don't need to stake a castle nut or carrier key, Locktite works just as well and is easier to do.

The Russians designed the AK47 so they could use our M16 ammo if they needed to, but we can't use their ammo. Last guy that told me that I told him that was even more impressive than he thinks since the AK47 was in regular production several years before the 5.56 cartridge was invented. He just nodded and agreed that the Russians are smarter than we think

I'll stop now before my blood pressure gets too high.

    Not exactly AR specific, but:

    "Wolf/Russian ammo is steel core."

It is lead core with a bimetal jacket. A magnet is attracted to it because of the mild steel in the jacket.

"The AK-47 is a better weapon than the AR-15."

Gunny proved this wrong one night.

I don't know if it's the "epitome" of KISS or not, but that's exactly what my primary rifle has on it.

Back on topic, I had a friend (who's actually a couple of years younger than me) tell me that the first M16 he was issued was made by Mattel.

He's honest to a fault, and he certainly wouldn't try to BS me on this particular topic, so I'm sure that's the way he remembers it. Makes me wonder if my memory of the Singer 1911 I had in our arms room back in '86 is true or not...

'They can shoot our ammo, but we can't shoot their ammo' was repeated to me as gospel by my squad leader in the '80s.

As to 'you have to master iron sights before you shoot with an optic', I equate that that to 'you have to learn how to navigate with a map and compass before you use a GPS'.

No, you don't, but you'll be better qualified to use either tool if you do... and better qualified to deal with technology failures.

One myth that crops up from time to time is the notion that a "quality" AR will cost 2x-4x more than the "lower tier" models.

And another (it isn't specific to AR's and it's more an issue of logic and statistics) is the issue of sample size, whereby samples of n=1 are used to make all sorts of assertions with respect to alleged reliability or unreliabity of an entire line of firearms.
