Are 20" barreled AR's a thing of the past?

I see the trend in AR barrel length hovering around 14.5"-16" consistently for some time now. I understand the benefits of short barrels for room clearing & CQB leaving the longer barrels behind. But there is a velocity advantage in the long barrels which means to me that terminal range is extended with standard M193 & SS109. Maybe not much, but it's there.

I built an A4 clone last year & I enjoy shooting it even more than my multiple 16" builds. For a general purpose long gun, this rifle seems to attract me the most lately. I'm considering buying an ACOG for it to increase it's versatility. The slight increase in weight doesn't seem to be an issue over my main 16" middy. Any other long barrel fans out there?

Longer barreled AR's still have a purpose, that being a SPR/Precision rig. 14.5 and 16's are the norm now as u can do literally anything with those, especially a 16. A 16 can be topped with a Aimpoint or eotech or acog and be a general purpose gun or be topped with a mid range optic for reliable engagements out to 600 and even farther depending on shooter skill.

When time and finances allow, I'll definitely be doing a retro Model 601 or 602. For me, it's a collector thing. I think the only use I have for a 20" barreled 5.56 rifle is a cool conversation piece to kill coke cans at the range with. I think most people have likewise determined that they don't have a need for a 20" barreled 5.56 rifle.

I love shooting a stock A2 in daylight without armor from conventional positions against cardboard and paper targets.
Change any of those conditions and my sentiments change drastically.

I would like to have one for fun shooting on the range, but I'm still sold on the versatility of the 16" carbines for practical shooting.

i have a 20'' BCM that i sent to ADCO for fluting, installed a 12'' DD omega rail, a battlecomp, and had the whole thing black-t'ed. i put a sopmod stock on it, and it balances real nice. i figure this will make a fine SHTF rifle, as i live rurally. this has proven to be a very accurate, reliable rifle, one i would bet my butt on.
