    First AR, suggestions?

I recently picked up a RRA Operator as a gift and am looking for some advice/knowledge. I'm a Marine so I know the M16A2/A4 pretty well and own a couple of AK's, but this is my first AR.

I guess my question is what is recommended for, if anything, change on this particular AR? I have fired about 150 rounds through it so far and it's surprisingly pretty accurate. Iron sights at 100 yards had about a 2 1/4 inch grouping and standing at 36 yards a sub 1 inch grouping.

I know I want a red dot and have had my eye on the Aimpoint T-1 and Aimpoint PRO.

My three complaints on this system are 1) This rifle is extremely loud...I have put plenty of rounds down range over the years and have never heard a 5.56/.223 make this much noise... and 2) Even after CLP application, the bolt likes to stick on the initial feed of a new mag. And 3) The stupid markings on the magwell that read "Rock River Arms Operator"...They could have done without that.

Please give your thoughts and any advice.

    1) This rifle is extremely loud..
Wear hearing protection!!! lol count resist. I am guessing the "loud" is that you are shooting a 16" barrel instead of a 20 ", so you are feeling it a bit more.

Congrats on your starter AR. You will find what you like and what you don't and probably end up with a few more AR. I will make one bet...you will pick a different brand for your next AR. (not saying yours is bad...just saying, hang out here, read lots, and learn TONS)

Run it wet. Really, i recommend a good lube like Slip2000 ewl, one that doesn't burn off quickly.

One last note, don't be too concerned about having it perfectly clean, an AR will run fine if it is dirty, as long as it is wet.

Unfortunately you have already made the purchase so my advice of not buying the RRA "Operator" won't help you.

In any case we have ALOT of stickies about what to look for (inspections and shortcomings) that will help you.

    Particular items of interest would be;

    1. Staking of the castle nut.

    2. Staking of the bolt carrier key.

    3. Proper buffer.

    4. Whether your chamber is truly 5.56.

Modifications SHOULD be based on what you are wanting to do with this rifle. If you are happy with just taking it to the range once in a while to maintain proficiency with the AR/M16 platform, then you shouldn't need to "change" much.

If you are looking to compete with it, that's a different story....

I agree with Iraqgunz with properly staking the carrier key. I have seen numerous RRA rifles with this problem with our local SWAT guys...especially after they get lots of rounds through them.

Ream your chamber to true 5.56 NATO.
RRA is well known for stuck cartridges, due to tight chambers.
You could get a new barrel, but given the time and expense, you will probably make out better with just buying a new upper.

Stick a Redi-Mod on that lower and nobody will ever see the roll-mark and you will greatly increase your on-board ammo availability.

We just had a shooter with a stuck LIVE ROUND in an RRA this past Tuesday night. The even funner part was that it got stuck with the bolt out of battery. I had to pop both pins, remove the upper, tap the back of the carrier to get the gun to go into battery, and fire the round to get the thing to clear.

    Something to consider

Like was already said, stake the carrier, and address other details and shoot it till it breaks or you run out of ammo money.

Or sell it and get something else. Whichever...

I usually don't do this, but send me your RRA and I will go through it (to include check the chamber) and fix all the issues. You just pay the shipping.

I hate to see a fellow Vet get stuck with this junk so I am willing to assist.
