Is there a benefit between the 16 over the 14.5? I realize I would have slightly more velocity and the ability to change flash hiders.
Along with not changing flash hiders, you can add not being able to change gas block/FSB and barrel nuts. Therefore, you lose one of the great advantages of the AR platform, the ability to change parts and customise. You are pretty much stuck with the gasblock and handguard setup you started with. Since a 16" barrel with a basic flash hider or comp is only about 17.2", that's a big price to pay for that inch or so.

Just a legal note: you must SBR the lower before you can purchase an upper with a barrel length of less than 16".

If it's going to just be two uppers, I would absolutely select an 11.5" and 16". As much as I really like all my pinned 14.X units, the benefits over a 16" are tiny compared to the cost on most entry level units, and if you're trying to make it as handy as possible, go with a lighter barrel, lighter hanguards, and lighter accessories (might cost a bit more, but is still less than the cost of a pin and weld from most places) and work from there.
If SBR is in your future, keep in mind that you may want to make that a two stamp rifle: short barrels and suppressors go together extremely well.

Last note is going to be cost - how much are you looking to spend overall, and what sort of optics budget are you considering? If you're going to have two, I recommend one with a simple Aimpoint optic (PRO or H1) and a weaponlight, and add a sling; the second would have more leeway on optic choices and would probably be the longer weapon.

I think you guys have me convinced on the middy 16" and an 11.5".

Now to decide which one to build first...the 11.5 can be a pistol until I get my stamp on my lower so I'm not worried about that..

I think I will just have to wait and see which upper I can find a deal on first.

Man the posts here the past few days are ****ED up lol.

Anyway, I have an 11.5" with the TRX.

You might like it, Its pretty simple and SUPER lightweight. I kept it fairly simple. Just waiting on the light now

20" gun...LMT fixed rear sight, 1-2 point sling, TRX rail, flashlight, Vltor A5 Stock, F-marked FSB. Just a standard, simple, effective rifle.
Also, I'd suggest having a variable-power optic (say, 1.5-6x, 2-8x maybe?) in a LaRue mount to swap in and stretch the range of the rifle.

I think that rifle is all you need (go ultra-high quality parts on one gun, IMHO).

If you were to build a second rifle, I'd suggest an SBR in an 11.5" barrel, collapsible stock, Aimpoint Micro, flashlight and a single-point sling.

    That's what I'd do, anyway.

Ya that's crappy! Can't you just make it into a pistol? Or was the lower a rifle lower...

A little clarification- If you have two uppers, one at 16" or greater and one that's less than 16" and only one lower configured as a rifle, you can have both lowers in one location as long as you keep the 16" or greater upper installed on the lower. It isn't considered "Constructive Intent". If you have two lowers configured as a rifle and both uppers at the same location, you are in violation
