Going on a diet; Advice for a lightweight with FSB

    Hey guys,

Looking for some specific advice, Im trying to shed some weight from my stick. I'm switching to a CTR stock, and thinking of switching to a lightweight rail. I currently have the stock SWS rail on my N4, I'd like to retain my pinned FSB but I'm wondering what rail I should use. I was thinking of using the TRX, but since I would have to remove FsB to install the rail maybe I should just shave it and run a longer rail. Also considering a rail with a cut out for a little more forward grip but I think that would make things heavier.

    Any input is appreciated.

The DD Omega rails are a two peice free float design that is super easy to install. They weigh 9.8oz. That is about as light as standard hand guards.

Which N4 do you have? Carbine or midlength? Just FYI, the flashhider is pinned on my friend's 14.5" N4 Carbine, which will make a rail change even more involved.

Personally, I also like the Troy VTAC Extreme rail. Noveske uses these on their VTAC uppers as well. However, as you said I think these work best with a shaved FSB.

I'd also look at the various Daniel Defense offerings. They have a few that will allow you to retain the FSB and extend the rail forward as well.

Good call, mine is a middy, and I hadn't even thought about the FH, thankfully it's not pinned. I like DD and centurion rails but I think will just add weight in the long run.

The Magpul MOE is pretty light weight. I put together my 14.5" BCM build specifically to be light and I'm very happy with the MOE handguards. Although a little more limited than the Troy TRX Extreme, you can still mount rails only where you want.

I got a Bravo upper with the TRX on it over a low pro gas block and love it.
I'd swapped the gas block on a different rifle and used the MidWest Industries SS. I liked it until I got the TRX upper. Guess what's gonna get swapped next?
A friend of mine used the MOE handguard and standard FSB. I like that set up a whole lot more than I meant to. Lightweight, inexpensive and the rail sections are much easier to install than the other guards I mentioned. The shape of the MOE feels really natural in your hand.

Roger that, I hadn't really thought about a moe set up. I'll have to look into it, are the moe handgaudrds pretty tough. My rifle tends to get beat on.

So far so good on the toughness of the MOE handguards. They seem to be holding up pretty well. I've dropped mine on a couple of barricades and walls that I thought "shit, that cracked 'em". But no, they've been solid for me. If you try to break anything you can, but my MOEs have held up pretty well.
