A friend noted that wasp spray goes about 20 ft in a fine stream, and burns like hell. I have been thinking about whether I should have some on hand and if so, when it would be used as human repellent.

I reckon wasp spray would be the .25 Auto of self defense sprays...
Why carry something that is less potent but is the same (or more) of a hassle to carry than the real deal??
Personally...if I was to carry a spray, I'd want something that was designed to burn eyes and lungs to the maximum...not a jaga...maybe...
But maybe it's me...

25acp factory ammo is like 22LR ammo, but handloads with double charges make the 25acp kick really hard and penetrate really deep.
It still makes a small hole, but WAY better for getting through an Elk skull.
I'm pretty sure wasp spray can cause permanent damage to one's eyes.
I am not an attorney, but you may want to look into the legality of using it on people. I'm also willing to bet that there's a label on the can that states something to the effect of "... it is a crime to use this in a manner other than directed...".
This being said, if somehow my life or the lives of others were threatened and all I had on hand was wasp spray, yes I'd use it. I wouldn't purposefully keep it handy for defense though.

Wasp spray can indeed cause permanent eye damage. I have seen such cases on the street, not common, but it happens.
I wouldn't use it unless it was a deadly force scenario and I had nothing else to use, like a gun or bat.
Carb cleaner is also very harmful to the eyes and is used as an anti-people spray at times.
I was walking through my woods with my little kids and I told them that in those woods I had seen mountain lion, black bear, deer, porcupine, coyotes, raccoons, and mountain beaver. But I am not afraid of any of them. I added that I am afraid of yellow jacket wasps, and I had been stung all over a couple times. Both kids started crying and said they never wanted to go with me into the woods again.

We have a can of wasp spray by the bed. It is our first and only non-lethal defense backed up heavily by my Colt 1911. The spray does not stop activating until the suspect is given the antidote. This stuff is friggin awesome for first line of defense. Once sprayed and then covered by small arms you own this perp! Highly recommend it. As far as being sued...well lets just say "he had a gun" so no chance in hell of me getting tagged for bug spraying this perp.
It is a bad idea at best a false sense of security at worst.
If someone enters your home knowing your are there (i.e. at night) then they are intent on doing you harm. Most criminals are cowards, they steal when your are not home. If they enter knowing you are home they feel they have an advantage (i.e. numbers, weapons, surprise...etc.). Think about that. People involved in this type of invasion are not criminals they are predators. The last thing I would suggest is to spray them with wasp spray. Secure your family first, and get our if possible. If not prepare to defend yourself.
