All CS Springs have rust issues?

    Happy Halloween!

So like most of the rest of us I have been hearing good things about Chrome Silcone springs. Supposed to have longer life and may be the future of springs.

Now I have heard time and time again that the CS springs from C products will develop a surface film of rust and then this reportedly stabilizes(?) and will not affect the function of the spring/mag.

Recently I read somewhere that when Magpul was developing the P-Mag they thought about using CS springs, but a salt spray test caused the springs to rust so much they broke at a certain point. Interesting, but this jibes with my experience with any firearms rust, it does not stop, it continues, until you clean it off. oil it, etc.

So for now I am continuing to use stainless steel springs, in my mags, A because I don't have any money to upgrade! And B because I want to ask this question.

Does this rust issue occur with all CS springs? I noticed that it seems like the CS springs that C Products use are not as expensive as say the ISMI product, does ISMI suffer from the same issue? Now you might never see rust issues with a CS spring, that's used inside the rifle, since it's lubed all the time, but I guess that's another issue.

Anyone have any comments? I am looking forward to everyone's input.

Every CS spring I've seen exposed to moisture for prolonged time has rusted(more so with salt of course). CS springs have their place for sure, just avoid any moisture with them. Range/training mags that won't ever see water, CS springs good. Personal defense mags, SS good. JMO

Well, maybe it's a matter of application. For internal springs, especially bolt group springs, definately. They will usually see lots of lube. But for mag springs, maybe not. They are supposed to stay lube free so as not to attract dust and dirt. But this can also cause CS springs to corrode.

That was also my experience with C-Products mags. I did not like that coat of rust on my springs either so I switched them out.

That's not rust, that's a protective oxide coating.

I just ordered some mags with CS springs. I'm not going to put them to any hard use anyway, but I may take them apart and coat everything with auto wax for good measure after reading this.

FYI, cheap CS springs will rust. High grade CS (like the ones ISMI uses) do not rust (as far as I have seen).

The CS springs that some mag manufacturers use are VERY cheap and do rust.

I personally ONLY use CS ISMI springs in my weapons and in my mags. These are the best choice IMHO because their life expectancy is MUCH greater than SS springs.

The CS springs on my CP mags do show some surface rusting, especially those that live in trunks, but are wiped clean with no apparent issue. I would prefer a standard SS spring, and will ultimately switch.
