    S&W 686+

My brother is looking at getting a smith and wesson 686+. It is a seven shot 357 mag. He found one at a gunshop and the guy said he would let him have it for $725 out the door. it is stainless and has a 4 inch barrell. Neither he nor I know that much about revolvers. So i am asking the experts is this a good deal or do you think we can find a better deal on one? it is a used gun.

Even if new, you could get a new one from Buds Gunshop for less.

I'm curious, did S&W ever make the 686p (7 Shot) with a hammer mounted firing pin?

It seems really high, but without seeing it and having all the details on it, I can't be sure. I checked Bud's and they sold a used 4" 686+ for $559. The list new 686+ Pros for $745 shipped.

I don't think somewhere in the low to mid $500 range is totally out of the question. At least not in my area.

Gunbroker has one that is for sale in Ohio. They started the bidding at $600 with a buy now of $650. So far, no one has bid on it.

But, if I were to buy a used one, I would look at any of the pre-lock and pre safety hammer Smiths. That's only because of my personal preference for those older Smiths.

Yes S&W did. It is a fantastic revolver.

I would look for a older 686 if I were in your shoes. One in great condition can be found in about the 500 dollar range. If you are wanting a 7 shot look for a 686-4 model with a 4in barrel or whatever length you want. You will see this designation on the frame once you swing the cylinder out. You may also want to consider a 6 shot as well due to the fact that there is not as much variety in speedloader selection and other stuff as in the standard 6 shot models.

Nothing other than my own personal preference. I like the older Smith and Wessons. If I were to buy anymore, it would only be for a collection and nothing more.

Smith and Wesson has gone through quite a few evolutions with their revolvers. You'll hear about pinned and recessed revolvers and also the so called pre-lock revolvers. those are the ones that I am interested in. Again, it's what I prefer only from a collection stand point and nothing more.
