    Check your food...

My stuffed an opened bag of some type of nutty bran type cereal in the back of our pantry a long time ago. What happened? Some type of bug got in there and laid eggs which equals larva. Nasty shit, and we are having to throw our entire food storage away because as we started cleaning things out these worm things were everywhere. Crawling on canned foods. Just nasty.

And don't let your wife eat one serving out of something, and then put it back never to be touched again.

how long do you think it was in there? that sux u have to toss everything! you dont think you would be able to wash/sanitize the cans or other packages? or you just dont wanna take any chances? probably the latter i would assume. Glad to know as im just starting my collection and i definitely dont have the cash to replace a whole stash. i hope it works out for you!

It takes up extra space, but we have a shelf for nothing but opened items, so they get used first. Works for us.

Buy a few boxes of 2 gallon zip lock bags and place open food boxes inside and seal, no way for bugs to get a foot hold on your food stores.

Did the bugs get into any of your unopened fare?

I dont know. They were larva like small meal worms about 1/4" long, and then turned into small flying insects about 1/3" long. We just tossed everything except the canned dog food and made sure there wasnt anything left on them.

Id have saved about half of it but my wife said she wouldnt eat anything I saved....

Anyways we got a lot bought this week, and I sold some old gold jewelry for a good price so no big deal...

That really sucks, its too bad she wouldn't let you save more of it. I'd get some sealed containers for anything not in a can and do some spot checks for the next couple months. If you got bugs once you'll get them again. Unless you can out how they got in the in the first place.

Those seem to be the notorious "maggots". Laid by the common house fly. They remain in the worm state for about three days to a week, then grow into house little flies. They are not poisonous or dangerous or anything, just disgusting! I agree with throwing all other opened itmes away, but the sealed canned goods could have been kept, just wipe them off.

Similar situation at my house though; I work out of the country, and came home to month old potatoes in my pantry one time. The stank was unbearable, and the oozing mass of maggots and hundreds of tiny flies was quite gag worthy.

    All lessons learned my friend.

Most likely you're seeing flour weevils, whose eggs you brought home in a bag of flour. They hatch, turn to larvae, and then little fruit fly-looking bugs.

When you buy a bag of flour, put it in the freezer for 4-5 days, and the eggs will be killed.
