My dog died 6 months ago and was like a child to us. Eating her would have been out of the question. In a disaster or other scenario where a few like minded people were sharing a refuge, I can see where dogs(or other pets)could be a root of problems. Examples of problems causing disharmony are excessive barking, dogs fighting with other dogs, people having several dogs, poorly socialized animals posing a threat to other participants, and disagreements about pet management among those sharing the refuge. Since many dog owners think of dogs as people(and therefore family members), dogs in a refuge may cause more trouble than they are worth to the survival effort. Criticizing Fido, raising your voice to him, kicking him off a bench or out of a chair, or pointing out that he is contributing negatively to the big effort might cause all hell to break loose. It falls into the same category of complaining about a bratty kid. And then there are a few cats in the mix. Perhaps early on there should a set of agreements to address dogs and other pets.

They make very good alarms and I have no doubts about them being very pissed if someone came through our door uninvited. Not saying trained guard dog reaction, but it'll damn sure put someone on notice. Shtf scenario, probably not good for the ridgeback. But the pittie is a bad bitch at killing stuff. Coons, possums whatever. She is good and finding and flushing critters out. He has yet to kill anything and wants to be friends with most critters.
:-), Pretty typical of a pitridge. They tend to get the best aspects of both breeds.

Do not know if this was directed at me. My boy is a am staff/ridge mix. But here is a older pic of my dogs. The male is around 2ish in this pic. He is bigger now. I think he was around 60# here, now around 75#

Those are some nice looking dogs. How big do they get when full grown?

Purebred Ridgebacks, 75-130#, with the females typically on the lighter side. Most males maybe around 100#, but I've seen those heavy outliers at 130#.

Mixed breed ridgies are all over the map on weight and size. Sort of depends on what they are mixed with.

Man this thread cuts deep and keeps pouring salt in me. I miss my friend. He was put down for cancer 2014 and I still think about him every day. A GSD that was intensely loyal and protective of me, my wife and kids, and home. Helped me out of a couple bad scenarios and my kids were safe outside from 2 or 4 legged hazards. Wife isn't ready to let me get another one yet, her plate is full at the house. So, I'll continue to have a bit of emptiness.
