When I first thought about getting an AR, I thought getting a complete upper and building up the lower would be a good idea. It didn't look to hard and I thought it would be good experience so I did it. I'm glad I did. It isn't anything fancy, just a no frills gun built with decent components. I picked up an LMT carbine upper for $400, spikes lower and F/A BCG, a DD LPK, BCM charging handle, Magpul furniture and MBUS Gen 2 rear sight. If you can follow directions, make sure you function check as you go, you should be good to go. I did have access to a friends workshop with vice blocks, etc. but didn't use it because he lives in the glorious republik of mass. and I didn't feel like being a felon. I picked up a few tools to make the job easier and couldn't be happier with my first AR.

Buy your fist AR and leave it alone. There is so much snake oil out there on the market today it's ridiculous. Buy a BCM, DD, LMT, KAC, or Colt and leave it alone. There is no need for fancy coatings etc.. Clean, lube, shoot repeat.

Definately buy a complete rifle as others have said. If I could do it over again, then I'd also focus on getting really good with the rifle "as is" before modifying it in any way. I'd also get into a basic carbine class ASAP. It'll save you so much headache, trust me.

+1, get a good one and establish a baseline. It will provide clarity with what you may want to move on with.
