These type threads are like impending rapture threads. A lot of nonsense. Just about every new gen has been proclaimed the downfall by the old guard.

Skinny Jeans = tight around the crotch = reduced sperm count.

If we're lucky there won't be another generation after that, so who cares?

I realize that there are exceptions to the rule, but I look at kids like this and I see slip-shod parenting. Period.

I'm just making sure I'm following your point. You're saying is non-urban kids where you live are just now adopting urban music, dress and behavior in significant numbers?

Don't think that I'm defending it, I loath "urban" culture with a passion, no matter who's adopted it. But this has been a 20+ year trend in most places.

People have been complaining about white kids and "black music", since always. Jazz, swing, blues, rock and roll, Motown...and now hip hop. This is nothing new.

I think of it like this, music is music, it is either good or bad, and as long as a person is not a shitbag, I don't really care what they listen to.

Not so much country, but growing up in East New York and Brownsville I knew plenty of black and Hispanic kids that were into rock, metal and British new wave at the height of NWA, and Public Enemy.

One of my best friends from back east lives in Colorado now and is thug as hell to the eye, but then you'll hear him blasting Dave Matthews band.

It happens and cuts both ways more often than you think.

I said nothing about "black music." I'm speaking of a very specific type of culture, which includes music, dress, mannerisms, slang, and social attitudes. It has crossed all ethnic, racial and economic boundaries.

I'm white. I have an extensive collection of pre-1960s blues music almost exclusively created by black artists. I have not adopted the dress, mannerisms, slang and social attitudes of the culture that spawned this type of music.

Hmm.....you just described almost every shack between Memphis and Atlanta. This has been going on in the south so long it's become a stereotype. Seeing the N shack with the brand new caddy, jag, mercedes or BMW with the model number pulled off. Like most people don't know that it's the base model!! Living in shacks that are so shitty dog houses would be a step up. Freakin Hilarious!

Well in one respect they were right. The embrasure of those previous jazz and swing cultures you mentioned resulted in things like the zoot suit riots which were hardly a good thing. And the problems of Harlem didn't follow you home at night when you left Harlem.

But the BIG difference is how much we tolerated it in the past compared to today. The negative associations of jazz, swing, rock, etc. were just baby steps in the incrementalism that has gotten us where we are today.

This is hardly a short skirt, too much makeup, tight jeans and ridiculous vocabulary problem. You can easily stop doing all of those things when it is appropriate to do so. Ghetto on the other hand is a mindset and a culture.

When I see a kid with a stupid hair cut like a faux hawk and stupid clothes I pretty much don't worry about it. He can stop looking like a retard at any time, but when I see some kid doing his best "thugs in compton" I think that is more "who he is" rather than what he is wearing or listening to.

And I agree, if a person is a decent sort, I could care less what kind of stupid music they like,

It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.
