    Who prefers 40s&w over 9mm?

Very interesting thread about why 9mm over 40. Not to beat a dead horse, and with the understanding that user proficiency is clearly the most important aspect by far and away; but to have an even sided argument I wante to see if anyone prefers 40s&w as their prefered caliber and if so why?

40 throws a heavier and bigger bullet at the same velocity as 9 does. It is not proven to be superior to 9 on unobstructed targets, but is accepted to be superior through intermediate barriers, bones etc.
To me, this is enough of advantage to carry 40 over 9, given very little penalty in capacity and dimensions.

That said, I carry 9 because I can't shoot 40 as well as 9. I rent a 40 once a year, and I usually can't wait for that box of ammo to end. If the day of equipotency ever comes, I'll switch to 40 in a heart beat, and relegate 45 to a recreational use.

I agree with YVK. I don't doubt that it's a slightly better all around choice, but I like shooting 9mm so much more I just stick with it.

I prefer the .40 in the S&W M&P platform over the 9mm. However, in virtually all other platforms I prefer the 9mm. There tends to be a measurable gap between pistol durability, handling characteristics, felt recoil, and shootability in most pistol models between the 9mm and .40. In the M&P, the gap is very close........so close that it becomes a toss-up. Then of course there is the issue with the M&P using a .40 length feed ramp for the 9mm which adds an element of unreliable first round feeding of the 9mm model that pushes the .40S&W ahead in reliability.

Caliber is ALWAYS secondary to maximizing the capabilities of the shooting platform. Most pistols do better in 9mm, so for me using the .40 over the 9mm is reserved for a very few types of pistols.

I haven't shot a .45 for anything but dicking around in at least a year or two. 9mm or bust.
