    Ballistics Mask...(pics)

    Auction hunters...anyone watch it?

Last night I was watching this show and they had a Ballistic Mask, which they shot a few times with a 9mm.

They put it on a watermelon and put 3 rounds into it (unknown distance) maybe 15 yards?

It took a beating but there was NO penetration. Your face would most likely be ****ED and need reconstruction but other than that it worked.

Does any LEO or SWAT or Mil. use these?

I can see them appealing to posers or mall ninjas with the rest of their "Tactical" garb.

This is the same one they shot

It might look all Jason from the Halloween movie but I can see that saving someones life. It would leave a mark however.

I know it's stupid and unproductive as hell to make this post but all I can envision is someone's face looking exactly like the mask after impact forces it back.

    Seastory time...

I see the mask and I think of when I was in Prague standing Post 1 when the Israeli Ambassador came in to visit Shirley Temple. We couldn't allow his security detail to enter the Embassy with weapons so I asked them to come around to the clearing barrel, clear the weapon and leave it with me at Post 1. I can't remember what the pistol was but it was a 22.

I asked them if they felt comfortable with that caliber's stopping power. The informed me that they can't be on a government security detail until they consistantly hit the eyes. He wasn't talking down or taking a jab at my S&W Model 19 or the Marines, he was very professional and was treating us as professionals.

Our breacher in the stack wears one, keeps it in the truck with the ballistic shield.

Then there is also. . .

And the HGU-56/P Rotary Wing Helmet (Gentex Systems) with Maxillofacial Shield. Though these are more to protect a door gunner from FOD and rotor wash than incoming small arms fire.

Looks like the Bolivian police have these masks:

When I originally saw that article I had no idea they were ballistic shields and thought it was an extremely cheesy intimidation play.

Seems that that large point for the nose would be perfect at channeling projectiles directly into the eyes. Not sure how effective this would be but I guess every little bit helps if you're in a situation where catching bullets to the face is a higher possibility.

Seems like eye protection should be built in to something that extensive. At least protection against little pieces of crap that might come off a bullet that was deflected off the mask around the center and might get into the eyeholes where the bullet won't due to the angle.

The mask on the bottom kinda looks like a dog face bascinet visor from medieval times with a less pronounced nose area.
