You either have a very common name, a name that is the same or very close to a felon, or a name that is sorta close and an SSN that is sorta close to a felon.

I am a FFL and get delayed about 1 in 5 personal purchases and ALWAYS get kicked up for further review, normally get a proceed but still occasionally get a 24 hr or so delay.

Have seen people get delays that have never even had a speeding ticket. IMHO these delays are NICS generated to make sure the FFL is following policy.

Were you arrested and charged with assault and/or battery way back when?

If so, this can easily cause a delay even if the charges were dropped. If not, then it could be a case of similar identity where it does help to include your SSN on the 4473.

I had a similar situation back in the day (and also have/had level 2security clearance), but got flagged and denied many times. I decided to appeal and complete the request for a UPIN. After NINE months, I was sucessful.

My last three long gun purchases: two shotguns and .338 rifle I was unable to walk out of the store with the items. Won a Browning .338 and when I went to Bass Pro today, filled out the paper work, again NIC red flagged me.

On the 4th day following the NIC, I then can retrieve the long gun purchase.

Shit, I haven't been in any trouble since a bar fight back in the early 60's. Top security clearance for decades and classified as a firearms collector.

What are the reasons, one would be flagged?

Ive been delayed a few times around here. I can tell you for certain that everytime Ive been delayed has been because there was no one available to handle a request for an individule with a clearance, and everytime Ive been approved as soon as such a person could get to me.

At a recent Gunshow I got a curious comment about that that apparently Security Clearance checks do cause a "flag" on the NICS. Its absolutely hearsay, but given the number of people in my area with such things, it could be something.

I'm as clean as a white piece of paper and I was held up once or twice. It makes you feel guilty, but it does happen. Get a CCW (if you can), and its a non issue.

In a beach town with college kids and military there was always a magistrate available. We went directly from the bar and appeared before him, he found out we were military from different branches of the service. Fortunately it was the early 60's and he was a vet, he laughed & told us to shake hands and get the frig out of his court. Therefore never charged and or served one second behind bars.

    Those were the days!

EDIT: as for a CCW, not anytime soon in Maryland.

I work at a Gun Shop on a part-time basis and lately, it seems that anyone who holds a Security Clearance gets flagged. I'm not sure if they changed the way the NCIS process is conducted or what.

Recently, I know of a Deputy who was also flagged for quite a few days when he used to get a response within minutes. FWIW.

Thinking about this logically for a second, I don't see how a clearance would casuse a delay. If anything it should speed it up.

It would be nice to get a direct answer from someone at the FBI/NICS. Somewhere I recall seeing something about this situation being addressed and the response was that it had no impact. I just can't remember where I saw it.

I agree it makes no sense, but 'logic' and 'bureaucracy' don't play well together. Particularly 'Government Bureaucracy'

I've enough experience to know stranger things have occurred when dealing with large organizations.

As someone with a TS/SCI and bought guns, I never had a problem.

I also do not think that the NICS office sees your security clearance.

I agree with you, if anything it should speed up the process but in my experience it doesnt. In my area there is a large number of people with clearances and they get delayed often enough that I have started warning people ahead of time not to be surprised if they have a clearance and it happens.
