Ammo hoarding can leave you stuck with a white elephant if you decide not to keep supporting that caliber.

During the Obama scare, I bought a couple of AK's and about 5,000 rounds of 7.62x39. Now a couple of years later I'm down to one AK and about the only thing that keeps me from getting rid of it is that I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of ammo I'll never use.

That sucks. Is there any resale market for the ammo?

You could probably sell the ammo - you might not make money but you would have cash in your pocket...

I'm ashamed to say I do not own a Colt...

I can't really see myself getting out of 5.56NATO any time in the near, or even distant, future. When caseless ammunition comes around, or we gets phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range, I'll look into moving away from 5.56NATO. Until that day comes- 6.8SPC and 6.5Grendel really don't offer much practical advantage over 5.56NATO for 99% of users.

If you're into every new "wonder cartridge" that comes along, maybe stocking up isn't a good idea for you.

    Nope. I own 6.

One is an 18" SPR; one is a .22LR Tactical trainer (TacSol upper), set up almost identically to my LMT/Colt carbine, and similar therefore to my 16" BCM mid-length rifle, and my two 14.5" mid-length rifles.

While I also have 6 people living under my roof, my life's work puts me in the unique position, that should it all hit the fan, I might be "assisting" others, to get through the crisis.

I also subscribe the the theories, that the BEST set of spare parts, is ANOTHER rifle, and (regarding redundancy in an emergency), 2 is 1, and 1 is none.

With all the uncertainty in the country since January, 2009, coupled with the ATF's shenanigans in Fast & Spurious, I think I'm in a better position with "too many," than being in a position where, no more are obtainable - at ANY price.

I can see having multiple ARs. I can see having a back-up that is identical to your primary. I'm not saying take every one of them out and put 5-10,000 rounds a year through them, I just think that they should be shot. I buy guns to shoot them. I don't buy guns JUST to stockpile arms. I'm sure I will add a few more to my already decently sized collection, but for the most part, I'm very comfortable with having a small stable of reliable firearms with minimal accessories, lots of ammo, and lots of training.

In regards to the comment earlier about having a rifle that has been vetted, then gets taken out occasionally to fire to check for function, if you're unsure or untrustworthy of your training/competition carbine, it's probably time to start replacing parts to where you ARE comfortable with it. I understand that the stakes in competition are different from HD, but I treat every single one of my firearms as if I may have to depend my life on it's use, so when it's reliability becomes questionable, I start looking into what needs to be done to boost my confidence in that weapon's reliability.

and while you say you're not being absolute, you still are. You're acting as though I can't shoot my HD gun once a year, maintain it as necessary, and inspect for function and wear.

When your training gun is the same as your defensive gun, you reach several points where you have no idea the condition of that gun. You could have an extractor that is just about to break and you have no idea, or have some idea that it's reaching the end of it's service live but haven't changed it yet. Or you did your preventative maintenance and now you have a new part in the gun that's unproven.
I remember a few years back some of the higher end mil units were suffering higher than normal failure rates. One of the reasons was that they were using their high round count training weapons as their primary combat weapons. Some of you may know more on this issue, please feel free to expand if you wish.

I use a 6920 as my primary, I have a complete spares kit but I also have aquired a BCM as a back up.

An Aimpoint M4s is my primary RDS, I also run a ML2 on a S&W 15-22 that serves as a backup if needed.

I also hold over 5k rounds of ammo and around 50 mags in reserve. I will not tell anyone else what they should do but I'm fairly comfortable with the position I currently find myself in.

If affordable, having two of your gun seems like a good idea.

This discussion is off-topic though, the author purposely wrote the original post to make a clear & simple set of guidelines that people getting into ARs could follow (and maybe some long-time hobbyists should pay attention to - too many people making silly mods or focusing on the wrong things!) - without getting distracted by lots of unnecessarily details! Most of the threads on here are full of details about rather minor adjustments to carbines and quite confusing for a beginner, absolutely impossible to make a nice set of guidelines about. Bickering about details has turned this thread into another confusing one full of lots of differing opinions vs simple generic guideline with nice advice that can be safely adhered.
