    Rem 700 (PSS?) help

I am hoping that those of you in the know would be kind enough to help me out with a rifle I picked up about a year ago since my knowledge in precision rigs is VERY limited.

Back story: Bought this rifle in a package deal about a year or so ago from an "friend" that was in somewhat of a "money pinch" so to speak, there were other guns involved that I was more interested in but picked this one up thinking it might be fun to try my hand at the long range game. Well needless to say the interest in this never happened and the rifle has been sitting in my safe the whole time since, I have never even taken it out for a proper zero verification.(yeah, I know, go ahead and hammer me on that one, it is deserved).

    Specs:

Remington 700 PSS ( I am not 100% on this so help with verification would be great)
    26" barrel w/factory porting
    Factory stock
    Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 x 10x 40mm Long Range Mil-dot scope
    Harris Bi-pod

    So here is the question(s):
I am strongly considering off loading or horse trading this rifle to fund other needs or interests, what would be a fair price for the package?

If I decide to stick with it, is this combo at least a decent setup to get my feet wet in the long range arena or would there be changes that would need to be made?

Can you please tell me the provenance of my Remington 700 Bolt Action rifle:

    When made?
    Original configuration?
    Regular 700 or Police?

Thats a good looking stick. I have never seen a factory 700 P model with a ported barrel though. But Im far from an expert. I have been seeing a few of those scopes around but never new for sale so I would have a hard time pricing it.

Thanks for the contact. will advise with the info they send back.

C-grunt- yup, some of the same issues I have been running into with trying to ID this setup, unfortunately I also have had zero luck contacting the guy I bought it from to get a "refresher" on this rifle.

Pretty sure, at least that is was the roll mark on the ring around the front glass says, is there another way to tell? there is no etching on the bottom of the scope like the MK 4 but it does have the Leupold medallion on the side. Possible older model scope?

It's a 700VS not a 700P. The 700VS is the same barreled action as the 700P, it's just bead blasted and blued instead of parkerized and stuck in a HS Precision Varmint stock instead of a M24 style tactical stock. I don't remember but the VS may have been offered with a ported barrel in the late 90's

If the scope says Vari-X III instead of Mk4, then it's either a Vari-X III Tactical or a Vari-X III that was sent to the custom shop for a knob and reticle change.

Nice looking gun, weird ports for muzzle? Very cool paint job.

Don't want to be negative, but call in serial number to Leupold to make sure its authentic, that would certainly help. Chinese have been known to make a few Mk4's.

Thanks for all the info gents, it has been helpful. Sent an e-mail to Remington this morning so we will see what they have to say.

kilosierra-thanks for the heads up and info, going to move in this direction in the research side. the ports were one of the reasons I was questioning the actual model since I have never seen a PSS or SPS with them. But my experiance is very limited.

Pappabear- going to call Leupold today hopefully as time and schedule permit, It would be my luck for sure that it would be a knock off but will advise.

Ok, quick update. Talked to Leupold (great CS by the way) and they did verify that is authentic and that it was manufactured in 2000. It is also not a MK4, it is a Vari-X III 3.5x10x40mm Long Range tactical Mil-dot. It is also sttill covered by their lifetime traveling warranty which I thought was pretty cool since they said it did not matter who owns it, it is still covered.

Going to see if I can find any info on what it might be worth.
