    not aow - "other"

looked and did not see this posted yet. ar manufacturer is selling a configuration with a barrel less than 16", overall length over 26", forward grip, and not meant to be concealed. atf considers it an 'other'.

for the cliff notes here is the letter from the atf tech branch:

It's just a Title 1 firearm (not a handgun nor a long gun) same as removing the stock from a shotgun and replacing it with a pistol grip....at that point it's no longer a long gun by definition (ATF defines long guns as being designed to be fired from the shoulder). One would have to be 21 to do paperwork (4473) on a title 1 firearm.

How is this different from a pistol? Yea, I know they added a forward grip but, really.

the difference is that they said they could offer it with a buttstock but chose not to.

Can't add the vertical grip to the forend of a pistol. Doing so is considered "AOW."

Since they, the manufacturer, designed it from the beginning to have the vertical fore grip and it has a length over 26 inches it falls into the category of "other." (According to ATF)

If you added the vertical grip to a "pistol" the original manufacturer sold without it, you just created an "AOW."

Another ruling that common sense and logic have nothing to with, but those are the rules according to ATF NFA Branch.

(Sorry, rereading your question it appears as if you already understood this. Since I have already written it and it may help someone else I will post it.)

I like my KEG-12 AOW. A short shotgun without a butt stock makes sense to me but, adding a forward grip to an assault rifle without a butt stock doesn't. Personally, I'd rather have the pistol configuration without the forward grip as a title 1 pistol versus the Form 1/4 AOW with added paperwork and tax (though a $5 tax isn't too bad on a Form 4) which only gives me the forward pistol grip. I guess that's why I own an SBR AR-15 and Krink clone and not an AR-15 or Draco pistol (or AOW equivalent).

Part of the definition of a pistol is that it's meant to be fired with one hand.
Part of the definition of an AOW is that it's concealable. That has been given the magic number of 26 inches overall.
Apparently once a stockless firearm hits that same magic length it's not longer considered a pistol either, and is just an other.

Several examples of non-NFA weapons that fall into the other category.

    1. Stripped receivers that go to any firearm
    2. TC Encores with muzzle loading barrels
    3. Shotguns with greater than 26" overall length with no stock
    4. Semi auto M1919A4 builds

perhaps in california this gets them around some legislation?

I don't see the need personally.

Even if you WERE into the whole pistol thing, WHY a forward grip?

I guess it;s cool that they bucked the system in a way, but that being said, I'm not going to rush out and buy one.
