HOLY SH*T that was amazing fellows...these things ignite so violently that I requested a pants check after I finished up

Easily one of the coolest things Ive seen in a really long time...don't worry the video will be up shortly. 3 cameras....2 of them are in full 1080p HD, and the other one is in 720p HD. All HD

Looking forward to seeing this. Can't say I've ever taken a torch to a tracer round before. I have seen enemy 12.7mm tracers from DShK's get lodged in a dirt berm and continue to burn for a few seconds up close. Very bright. But I've not actually seen what it looks like at the point of ignition.

I'm with you on this, tactical considerations etc. aside...tracers are just plain fun.

I'm envious of your digital equipment. Outstanding photo and video quality.

I appreciate the kind words and I really enjoy sharing the footage with my friends online.

Two things I might should have considered before diving straight into this activity...1.) Should have worn actual sunglasses rather than just the safety glasses that I actually wore. 2.) Probably should have left the garage door open as these suckers leave one helluva toxic sh*t cloud behind.

I didn't have a clue that when they actually ignite, they damn near sound like a .22lr going off. I was a little shaky already knowing that I had to clear my torch and hand the moment of ignition but wasn't expecting a mini gun shot sound with them. I'm still seeing "splotches" in my vision

I figured we could take all the tracer discussion to another thread I started awhile ago since I'm started to hijack this thread.

Here's the video, but I'm updating the specialty ammo thread in the reloading subforum with more information and will use that thread in the future to discuss the tracers and such.

    Manually igniting XM856 tracers....

That way I can truly utilize the SDN-6's awesome versatility and make it very much worth the money and headache/ATF wait. Besides, I'm not a suppressor-holic I'd love to see some real deal definitive accuracy testing w/ suppressors vs. w/out. My pal swears by the fact that he sees improved accuracy when using an ops and his MK12.

I'm now thinking about holding off on a DBMG converted Noveske Afghan barrel and picking up a DBMG converted Noveske 12.5" crusader. I want to continue to explore this thread/topic rather than my previous LP supremacy topic. I go back to the SBR "outdoor" concept of mine or what Ive heard others refer to as the "patrol" concept.
By the end of the year (hopefully) I will be able to test 10.3", 12.5", and 14.5" barrels suppressed and unsuppressed using multiple types of ammo. I only have two ACOGs, the 10.3 wears a T1; so I think I will run one ACOG on both the 10.3 and 12.5 to remove any variables. (They are both the same model ACOG). I will use the same lower receiver as well.

I will do the testing at 300 yards. I'm looking forward to it. I could do it tomorrow if the BATFE ever approves the can I've had pending since July 11th.

The testing will not be comparing the accuracy from upper to upper but rather with each upper unsuppressed and suppressed.

I am a suppressor-holic, weird because I don't even own one yet but I've paid for three.

No joke, I think you might want to get some tinted welding glasses next time...or at least not stare directly into the flame. Those were bright even on my computer screen!

I would contact the examiner and simply inquire as to what the hold up is.

I just went through the last several replies of mine and tried to clean them up a bit in regards to removing some of the tracer discussion.

To get back on track, I think I want to pick up another short barrel for my MRP CQB and explore this topic further and see how much of a difference 2" in barrel length will have in terms of distance past 300yds. I consider my MRP CQB 10.5" rifle capable out to approximately 300yds in regards mainly to terminal ballistics. While 600yds is quite easy(95% hit rate) to put rounds on target, I think we all can agree that at that distance the terminal ballistics are quite anemic.

So I'm thinking that if I add 2" more of barrel length and then switch over from a CL construction to a match quality, single point cut rifled, and hand lapped SS construction, I can squeeze out as much velocity that is possible while still maintaining what I would consider to still be a very compact AR.

Right about now I'm really loving the idea of adding a 12.5" match SS barrel to the below configuration, and I equally love the idea of being able to evaluate and document first hand how much improved performance I will be seeing by doing so.

I wouldn't take that bet with the right ammo. Especially since I know someone (it's been posted before) who smoked two douches at 600 and 800M with an M4 (14.5").

I certainly don't doubt a 14.5" rifle at that distance, but I would think a 10.5" rifle like mine would be very iffy. I imagine a lot of it would come down to A.) hit placement, and B.) what type of ammo it was.

I think a very interesting discussion to have about this would be what specific type of ammo would yield the best terminal effects at these long distances and short barrels. If your not able to get expansion from expanding bullets, or your not able to get fragmentation from fragmenting bullets, does this open the door for a FMJ.

Quit doing that. All the info wanted... off topic stuff included.
