    Mk318 and Mk319 Velocity Threshold

Has the lower end of the velocity with the Mk 318 and Mk 319 been tested yet?

A poster on the other sight mentioned that Mk 318 would only frag down to 2350fps and claimed that info was from Dr Roberts but I didn't find it. I'm also curious about the Mk319 bullet because a guy on the other site is claiming to be using them in a 9" 300BLK with good results on hogs. I can't imagine they are going much over 2000fps at impact from that rifle and probably much less. He does have photos of exit wounds that suggest the bullet is fragmenting or expanding.

    Mk318 Mod0 is still working at 100 yds out of a Mk18.

    Mk319 Mod0 was designed around the Mk17 13" barrel.

By 300 yds, neither is doing much other than yawing over.

You might be surprised at what a full AK mag can stop; please check out p.17 here: http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/2008Intl/Roberts.pdf.

If the 319 is designed specifically for a 13" .308 that may explain why he's still getting results from the BLK. What is the muzzle velocity of the 319 from a 13"?

FWIW, the SOST designs will continue to exhibit some upset down to around 1900-2000 fps.

The 130 gr Mk319 Mod0 was optimized for use in 13-16" barrels.

MV of Mk319 Mod0 from the Mk17 13" CQC variant is a bit over 2700 fps.

There is a heavier version of 7.62 mm SOST optimized for longer range engagements out of 16-20" barrels.

    How do I word this...

At what velocity does the front half of the projectile on the MK318 SOST round experience a complete failure to maintain integrity with the solid copper back-half?

Well, as I noted above, they are continuing to upset as designed down to around 1900-2000 fps or so.

I have seen a test for the mk318 from a 7.5 inch barrel in clear gel both fragment and expand at around 2200 fps. The minimum velocity for the mk318 seems to be around 1900-2000 fps. If you are looking for a barrier load that performs at lower velocities check out the 62 grain federal fusion or 64 grain nosler BSB. they are both bonded soft points that will still expand down to 1700 fps and 1600 fps.

I've handloaded that same bullet and out of a 9" barrel, I'm only getting about 2000fps at the muzzle. Unless the guy on TOS is right on top of the hog, I doubt that bullet is having much of a terminal effect. I put 3 rounds of the aforementioned handload into gel at 50 and 100 yards and it went completely through two blocks (24 inches). I recovered one of the bullets and there was no deformation.
