Is it safe to change the smaller headed FP with the larger one in Colt rifles of this era that have the unshrouded carrier and different hammer etc. ?? ................... And, would that work and help ?

If the bottom of the carrier is slotted you'll need the FP with the smaller spool. If the BCG isn't slotted then you can use either one.

ETA: the smaller spool FP was created because of the slotted carrier. If your Colt has a slotted carrier then it should have the smaller spool FP.

I had one that chewed up firing pin retaining pins, and the firing pins get jacked up to.

All it takes is for the charging handle to slip out of your hand before the hammer cocks. When the hammer fallows the bolt carrier forward, the hammer notch grabs the firing pin, and stops the forward movement of the bolt carrier by holding on to the firing pin head. The firing pin retaining pin gets punished, and gets wonked. After two or three events, the firing pin retaining pin gives up the ghost.

I've had several FPs and FPRPs get beaten up in unshrouded carriers, and seen many more. Unless you're a purist that wants to maintain the gun in original condition, get a standard/un-neutered/M16 BCG.

Nothing related to unshrouded firing pins but I've seen a BCG go down at a competition for another reason. It was an RRA with an improperly staked gas key that came loose. Easy fix but that was the end of the match for that guy.

I have a friend with a newer RRA that is properly staked though, guess they got some complaints.

Have a LMT 16" upper with a LMT standard BCG and after 500 rounds the ejector started sticking in the bolt. At one point it was stuck half way down and pushing on it made it stick further in the hole.
This caused stovepipes and FTE's. I thought it may just be sticking due to grit or something so I took out the bolt. Cleaned and lubed the ejector, then took a spent casing and hooked the rim on the extractor and worked it back and forth. This worked the ejector, and after a few times it slid like butter. Took it to the range and didnt get through one mag with out the same problem. Love LMT but I ordered a BCM bolt carrier group after that.

Did they go through the same testing? Sure. This is an issue of design, not one of quality control.

LMT bolts have plungers? What do they look like and where are they located?
