I like the idea of this but I have questions/concerns about the gas ring life without the chrome lining?
Along with the process of how it was done. Did they nitrided the bolt carrier with the gas key(can't remeber if that is the correct term) on or did the they take it off and staked it after the process. I bring this up because of the screws and how the screws react to the nitride process if at all.

Please keep us informed on how these bolt carries run, good or bad. I hope good. Thanks for the pictures. If you don't mind me asking who bolt carries are those? BCM, DD, LMT?

PS. I know nothing about metallurgy but I am trying to learn.

nitrideing will remove the "flash chrome" ..

That's purdy. I have a question. Does the removal of the chrome alter the diameter and fit of the bolt in the carrier? Or is the thickness negligible?

done as 1 piece, no idea on the who made the bolts.. i had them laying around for different builds
it is so hard, i dont think you can stake it after it is done.. i think its RC 60 ish or higher.. i know the SS barrels are RC 70

Interesting. It never occurred to me to just be happy with the ring test rather than actually measure the inner diameter to see if it matched the drawings. I could not live without gauge pins.

I have seen the lesser bolts break under low usage. The bolt/bolt carrier is on the top of my list to not cheap out on. But I guess I'm just an elitist who likes everything to work when I use it

This is how I feel also...Well stated sir....

Any reason why you felt it necessary to necropost an almost 2 year old thread without providing something of substance?

Since he did can I ask if anyone here knows the difference between a Colt and BCM and DD carrier other than the names? If A DOD contractor makes true mil spec M16 carriers and will sell them to anyone then who really knows who is buying a DOD contractor produced part?

The 6.8 is the best choice for hunting deer and hogs with an AR15.

In some cases you are correct. I generally look at what the listed specs are as well as the stakings, chrome lining, etc...

But without having the gages to check the inner diameter, depth, as well as the gas tube orifice you just have to assume it's legit.

In the case of Colt or BCM they are marked.
