It's a pretty big issue when you're wanting to stabilize long heavy bullets.
I don't disagree with you. If you want to shoot that type of ammo you need the faster twist rate. I don't think most police departments are going that route though. I think for the majority of AR shooters the 1/9" is more than sufficient.

Personally, I want the 1/7" on my next rifle.

As for longer barrel life I believe he is referring to throat erosion. A faster twist is said to suffer from increased throat erosion as compared to a slower twist. (all else being equal) Personally, it's not something I'd be overly concerned about.

Yesterday I was talking with Ernest Langdon (S&W Military/Gov't Sales) and he confirmed that yes M&PTs will have steel gas blocks taper pinned soon. He did say that M4 ramps will be coming soon. Sadly the 1x7 will only be offered on LE guns and only with 14.5" barrels.

I wonder what the chances of a retrofit are.

It would be easiest to just by a new (M4 ramped) upper receiver from them and a new M&P15T barrel from them. When these parts become available with the M4 ramps and steel taper pinned gas block.
