Question Troy Alpha, or Midwest Industries SS-series rails: Duty grade?

    Hey folks,

I'm considering my options for a duty grade hand-guard / rail system. Have the new-ish Troy Alpha rails proven themselves yet? What about the MI SS-series rails? They look well built.

From an engineering point of view I knew instantly from the looks of the older VTAC / TRX mounting style that I was not happy with the design. I placed an order using the black-friday discount but now I'm reconsidering. At the very least I need to change my order to the Alpha but maybe something from a totally different brand.

    What say the hive?

Are you speaking from prior experience with this rail, or are you making an assumption? I have three of these rails, all of which get used for duty and heavy training. None of them have made me question their ability to stand up to duty use.

I have never held any of these in my hands. That said, I've got enough mechanical engineering experience to say that for me personally, I don't like the design of the Troy TRX / VTAC mounting system. Even if it came with rave reviews from everyone I just couldn't bring myself to trust it. So, I must look for alternatives.

My intention was not to comment on the Troy TRX / VTAC system. I'm more asking about the Alpha system.

What are your requirements in terms of what you need the rails to do?

Home defense gun. I'd like a couple sling attachment points, flip-up / back-up front sight, maybe a flashlight mount. That's probably about it. I'm not much of a VFG guy but perhaps a hand-stop of some kind.

Did that answer your question well enough?

My 3gun rifle gets abused, BIG TIME. Thrown around into dump barrels, onto tables. Banged off of barricades, the ground, cars. I'm running the 15in TRX extreme on it now, had the 13in all last season(shot 2 majors and 15 locals) and never had issues.

My 12.5 SBR wears a 11in TRX extreme as well.

Not to Derail but i was kinda wondering the same thing . Ive seen tons of great reviews of the troy trx extreme however quite a few members have said they do not like the "pinch" mounting system . I was wondering if the VTAC/JP rails use the same system ? If there is something out there comparable that has a better mounting system im all for it . Im looking at the VTAC/JP , MI SS , and VLTOR system myself.

The JP VTAC does not use the pinch mounting system that the TROY version does. The JP system is a much more secure mount but it is a heavier rail. More expensive too.

You sure about the Alpha rail system mount being a problem? I read someone else's post that there's a collar that goes on the stock barrel nut and that's what those screws thread into.

I really don't want a quad-rail but at this point, I'm frustrated that there aren't any options I'm satisfied with in terms of secure design. I might have to suck it up & go with a DD quad.

I will see if i can find the exact post where it was mentioned but basically the gist of it was that the owner of the rail grabbed it and applied some pressue and got it to shift/twist more than he would have liked . I want to say it was Markm but im not sure so please dont quote me on that . Point being it was a comment made by someone that knows way more than i ever will and i tend to take them at their word. Granted i have never had one myself i just dont want to find out the hard way . A few extra ounces really isnt a deal breaker for me since im just a dude that likes guns. Im not really lugging this thing around . My main Rifle has a MOE on it and its staying that way . Sounds like the JP and th VLTOR may be more of what im looking for .
