Yes, I get what I deserve......

This is why you check your rifles , then recheck...

Tonight I was installing a vert grip on my MOE hanguard and noticed the barrel of my AR was moving slightly in the receiver...

I removed the hand guard and checked the barrel nut with my AR wrench and it moves slightly with no resistance. It looks like the barrel nut backed off slightly and the only thing keeping it from spinning off is the gas tube. I've honestly never noticed this before. The MOE handguard is a little wobbly anyway so I guess I just never noticed it. It moves so slightly, that it was easy to miss. I don't know how long it's been like that. I've got over 3k through the rifle with not one problem (except for this). It's been reasonably accurate for a 10.5".

As luck would have it, I have a course on Saturday where I was planning on using the rifle. Luckily a local smith has a receiver block and tools to get me back running tomorrow (hopefully that's all it is). The upper is from Model 1 Sales. I'm not surprised.

The mouth breather who assembled it must have just snugged it down until the barrel nut hole alined and then put in the gas tube. F**k torquing to the proper spec, right? Then another unsuspecting mouth breather, me, bought it.

Anyway, check your stuff guys, recheck, then check some more, especially when you buy junk. I wish I had known more about AR's when I bough it, I'd have an LMT by now.

Feel free to dog pile, call me an idiot, have at 'er. I deserve it for buying trash.

Lol.. No one is gonna call you names buddy.

Its a lesson learned right? Just dont do it again.

Heres a big reason why we preach buying once and buying QUALITY.

If it makes you feel any better, I've found Colts and FNs with loose barrels. I recommend making it a regular part of your operator maintenance routine to check things like this (and others) for looseness.

On the bright side, maybe your groups will improve after having it properly torqued.

Yeah, I learned my mistake after spending a few days reading this forum. Funny thing is, I didn't take advise when it was offered. Stupid.

I went through the rest of the rifle a while ago. I have all the spare parts needed to keep it running, staked the castle nut, the carrier key looks OK. I can't believe I never noticed the barrel.

Good idea, from now on the barrel gets checked for looseness every time I clean it. Let's hope my groups improve!

To state the obvious...we all know the gas tube is the only thing keeping the nut from backing off further...soooo...the barrel had to be "finger tight" from the start...I have torqued countless barrels on AR's since A1's were the only thing available, I suppose if you stepped out for a moment, came back to the bench and completely spaced where you were at you might go with the tube and pin but getting to torque then over a little further to line up the notch is just part of it...that's the kinda stuff you shutter at, don't think it was a "cheap" upper so much as someone just missed it...glad your ok

Exactly why I posted a sticky about inspecting your weapon to include the barrel.

I assemble my own weapons (rifles at least) from good components for this reason. I won't have anyone to bitch at except myself if something that should have been tightened, was not tightened.

I have no-one to blame but myself. Hopefully some unsuspecting "newb" will read this thread before he goes ahead an buys a piece of garbage, and if he already has one, that he goes through it thoroughly and fixes the potential problem areas.
