This is why you check your rifles , then recheck...
Tonight I was installing a vert grip on my MOE hanguard and noticed the barrel of my AR was moving slightly in the receiver...
I removed the hand guard and checked the barrel nut with my AR wrench and it moves slightly with no resistance. It looks like the barrel nut backed off slightly and the only thing keeping it from spinning off is the gas tube. I've honestly never noticed this before. The MOE handguard is a little wobbly anyway so I guess I just never noticed it. It moves so slightly, that it was easy to miss. I don't know how long it's been like that. I've got over 3k through the rifle with not one problem (except for this). It's been reasonably accurate for a 10.5".
As luck would have it, I have a course on Saturday where I was planning on using the rifle. Luckily a local smith has a receiver block and tools to get me back running tomorrow (hopefully that's all it is). The upper is from Model 1 Sales. I'm not surprised.
The mouth breather who assembled it must have just snugged it down until the barrel nut hole alined and then put in the gas tube. F**k torquing to the proper spec, right? Then another unsuspecting mouth breather, me, bought it.
Anyway, check your stuff guys, recheck, then check some more, especially when you buy junk. I wish I had known more about AR's when I bough it, I'd have an LMT by now.
Feel free to dog pile, call me an idiot, have at 'er. I deserve it for buying trash.
