    308 at 1mile, what bullet?

I'm gonna do some extra long range shooting before the ohio winter kicks in and its too cold to do anything outside.

I got to thinking why not try the 308? I usually run 175smks or 178amaxs out to 1k but l think maybe my borderline sane pressure level 155scenar load might fair a bit better, l know it will stay supersonic farther.

I've also considered rolling some 208's, its a 26 inch barrel might be better, l dont know never messed with them. Or if you got any other bullet ideas, be my guest.

Anyways my questions are anyone have any experience in which bullet transitions from super to subsonic the smoothest? Also anyone have any load data for 208's?

And yes l know it wont be easy, its just for fun while the 7wsm is resting.

With a 175, even if you start it at 2950 (just an estimate, and probably too high) it's going to go transonic at about 1350.

Might as well go w/ 208 AMAX right? Or 155 Lapua.

The 208 only gets another hundred or so yards.

No 308 is going to be supersonic at 1760. So, you need a bullet that goes transonic and remains stable.

Thus far, the only bullet I've used that does it is the 175SMK. I've run them to 1554yds, and they disperse in direct relation to the rifles capable accuracy and my wind reading ability.

I've ran them at distance from 2550fps on up to 2750fps... and the 175SMK gets it done.

I second orkans statement. The 175 SMK will remain stable while transonic. It really doesn't matter at what distance it will become subsonic but how stable the round remains during the transition period.

As long as the round is stable and you have a good MV for your round, one can very accurately determine the trajectory of that round and come up with a very accurate ballistic table all the way to the ground.

If you've never held 10+ mils for wind on a 308... then you haven't pushed it to its limits.

Bergers 175g tactical bullet will stabalize longer than a 175g smk. Thats why Brian built it. Why not look at the 230g OTM from berger
