That's my biggest concern.
I travel every week and if the shit goes down quick, getting back to my family becomes a serious priority and honestly, it's a problem I don't have a solution for just yet.
I travel every week for work. This is a very real concern Of mine as well.

Here lately I have been thinking about it everyday.
I keep a pack in the truck that should offer myself 72 hours of sustainability if for someone reason I cannot drive home.
My driveway is 25 miles from my workplace, and if SHTF I would definitely stay off the interstate even if I could drive b/c I am pretty sure it would be a parking lot due to people getting out of the city.
I keep a GHB (Get Home Bag) in my vehicle and at my place of work. Due to my job, I might also have to report to a colocation site about 50 miles from my home. I have equipment in a locker there.
And the backpack that I carry my laptop and other work stuff in, has sufficient supplies to last me 24-36 hours.
I travel a lot, but if I am not traveling I am usually with my family as my office is at home. I am either going to be close by or thousands of miles away. My house is pretty well stocked with enough food and water to last six to nine months right now. My main concern would be with my wife and her lack of a defensive mindset. We have good neighbors who are well prepared as well (probably better stocked), but they would be dealing with taking care of their own families.
Good topic. Making me examine some holes in my own families preparedness.

I work in the oil field down in Gulf of Mexico (live in NH though) so 6 months a year I am 1000+ miles from home, and a few hundred miles from land
My line of thinking is that any sort of SHTF scenario probably won't happen overnight. It will be a few weeks, maybe months slowly getting worse and worse...at least thats what Im hoping for! That way Ill have time to get home for a block of vacation and just not go back...
Mindset, mindset, mindset. I do not think there is much that would prevent me from getting home. I was out and about during after Lenny while living on SXM and was out and about during/after Katrina. The vast majority will leave a determined, hard looking individual alone; especially if he is armed. If they choose to try and impede my progress, then they simply become another obstacle. However, let's be realistic, if I get cornered by five armed guys, I'm ****ed. My opinion of me getting home is predicated on me avoiding all confrontations.
It may take some time and hardship, but I'll get home. I don't spend hours/miles of blood and sweat in the mtns. with a pack on for nothing.
I always have at least a good knife, Berkey Sport bottle, and at least some Cliff bars. SteriPen on the way. I know for a fact I can go(and regularly do) on 300-500 calories a day for multiple days with these days including strenuous exercise. I routinely limit calories and hike my ass off with a heavy pack for days in a row. Still feel good and mentally alert. Raining, 40F, and getting ready to hit the trail right now. In 1 hr. from now I'll be looking for bear sign.
I'm lucky in the fact that me and my dad work together which happens to come with a house on the property am my mom doesn't work. Only thing here is that even though the population where I live is only 53000 I live 3 miles from town on a main road. Granted it doesn't go to any big cities it's still a worry. There's no neighbors on our side of the road but only 5 across. There's no tree cover and were completely visible from all directions. The only way to stop traffic would be of the bridge 1/4 mile from my house was out but there's still other ways a few miles away to get here. The plan would to be to stay as long as possible while packing up the trucks with supplies to make 16 miles to out hunting lease out in the boonies with a primitive cabin with only a woodstove and bunkbed. Heavy tree cover bout a quarter mile off the one lane road that is about 6 miles of the main 2 lane hwy. Sounds like a plan as long as getting there wasnt a battle
