    1-4x Scope for Duty use?

Anyone using a 1-4 optic on their AR for duty use as a LEO? I'm not new to AR's, but an EOtech and a Aimpoint is the extent of my experience with an optic on an AR.

I'm wanting something like a MTac, or M223 mounted in a quick release mount. Is it possible to co-witness with Irons?

Magnified scopes will not co-witness with irons. You mention this is for duty use? What kind of duty? As a guy who carries an M4 in the vehicle for duty use, right next to the 870, I can tell you a 1X red dot is the way to go for a wide variety of reasons. Get an Aimport Pro or M4S.

I don't know of any scope that co witnesses with irons. I put mine on a qd mount so I can remove it and use the irons if I need to.

I have an MTAC for my SCAR, non-duty use.

1-4x is not for me (personally) when it comes to duty use...

Stick to something with a standard red dot, aimpoint or the like

    1-4x optic

Was on patrol, now CID, but still carry my AR with an Eotech right next to my 590A1, in my unmarked. I was wanting to have a second gun with a small powered scope. Would this not be a good idea? I thought it would be nice to have options.

I am just starting to research this and have never even used a scope with an AR. If I put a 1-4x scope on my 2nd gun then it will definitely have to have a quick release mount.

Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

By far these things seem to be directed by policy. If your department is wide open on optics, the 1-4x's have some strong features and capabilities.

The biggest question is how much can you spend?

A 1-4x can go from $600 ish for one of the Leupold Patrol Fire Dots, all the way to $2700 for a Schmidt & Bender Short Dot LE.

There are tradeoffs at different price points, so its a good idea to have an idea of what you're looking for (capability) and your budget.

Not sure how your ride is set up in regards to a weapons lock/rack but take a good look at it and how it is set up' it will definately affect any optic you intend to mount.

I continue to be impressed with how accurate one can be with a red dot sight. The 1x4 optic setup is a good option for midrange and smaller targets were precise shots and target ID can be difficult with a red dot. The major draw back with the 1x4 type optic is shooting in awkward positions and shooting on the move. The eye relief will slow you down. For LEO I think the red dot will be your best option for the unknown type situations. Add a red dot magnafier and you have the best of both worlds.

I carry both, I have two rifles with theM4s, and 3 rifles with 1-4 optics. I have a TR24r red triangle, I had 3 other TR24's but recently I sold them and bought a Meopta ZD, NF fc2, and a S&B.

I can be just as fast up close with the 1-4. I am a 1-4 convert. I like the ability to have the magnification available. I also appreciate the view through nice glass.
I use the 1-4 on SWAT for all applications, from cqb to perimeter.
As well as on patrol. Obviously I' m set with optics for the foreseeable future, but if and when I need another I'll go with another 1-4.
    YMMV.

the only thing I wold quibble with is that the 1-4 suffers in comparison to a RDS in unconventional positions.

in a Dynamic Fighting Rifle class, we were in a supine (on our backs) position to simulate falling or being thrown down. the response to this is to thrust the carbine out against the sling and fire. the RDS was ideal, much better than irons sights, for rapid accurate shots, while the 1-4 was unusable, requiring a "point shooting" style.

at near contact distance this would not be an issue but even at 10 yards, the difference in accuracy and speed of response was substantial...
    never push a wrench...
