BCM Gunfighter / PRI Combat Latch Modification

The modification is by no means rocket science but every time the Gunfighter CH topic comes up, I tend to get the same questions as to "why" I prefer the PRI Combat Latch set up and "how" its done. For some it really makes no sense, but for those like myself who very much like the PRI type Combat Latch, they really love these. I just did several more and of course decided to shoot a video on the process.

When the Gunfighter was first released a couple of conversations here at M4C led me to start modifying the PRI Combat Latch which I prefer to work with the GF handle. Basically the response from Paul at BCM was that they didn't see why the PRI wouldn't work in the same manner as the stock GF latch if you could replicate the cuts correctly on the latch. Of course after some quick tinkering the results were just what I wanted and the PRI latch worked in the exact same manner that the stock latch works in keeping the load off the roll pin and on the latch and handle. It isn't cheap as you need the GF and the PRI Latch and you need about 10-15 mins of your own time. I do so many now, that I can get one done from disassembly to reassembly in about 10 mins or so.

Now I can just refer to this thread in the future.

Thanks Surf, great video, this combo has intrigued me for some time and I think I will finally give it a try. It would really be great if Vltor & PRI could do a collaborative effort some day.

If you study the design further, I believe you will discover that the scallops do not need to be cut so deep on the PRI to make proper contact. They do seem to offer clearance in case gunk gets in there.

    Nice mod!

Very cool. I like the PRI big latch better then the gunfighter as well. I was at PRI a few weeks ago and suggested this very collaboration to Dave.

Great video, I think I have some work to do now. Any way to purchase the modified latch?

Cool mod but did you ever consider a different manipulation technique for your conundrum of pinching when running the gunfighter handle?

You are correct in that the scallop or cut out area is not critical for bearing load as the load is placed on the point or flats. I think that since the back area of the GF latch is closed to create the contact points and not open like a standard handle, the scallops should mimic the original for the exact reason that you mention about possible debris. In my own guestimation the more point you have to the flats (or deeper half moon cutouts) you create a the ability of the point area to cut or push through any possible fouling. You would also create more space for clearing any possible debris which would be good. Of course this is only my hunch, but they must have something correct as I have not experienced or heard of any fouling. I do think for these reasons it is probably best to keep the cuts as close to the original.

I brought this up waaay back when the GF was first released. My guess was that BCM might benefit from both ends as they sell the GF and then they sell you the PRI latch also.

Sorry I don't do that type of work but there does seem to be some good interest in it.

I actually do not get "pinched" by the handle myself. I only note that this modification will eliminate that issue for those who do experience it. I can also modify a stock GF latch to eliminate that problem also.

I however just prefer the type of grip that I get with the PRI latch as opposed to the GF latch which is still similar to the grip on a stock latch which I don't care for.

My concern would be that with cutting the scallops to original size on the PRI latch, not much material remains
