Friendly reminder...nearly all torque values are in foot pounds...

Saw a dude's castle nut back off on Sunday at the range. He said he built the rifle himself and was sure he did everything right. (He didn't stake the castle nut first of all). But the main problem was that he kept saying that he tightened it to 40 inch pounds. A small dose of logic would have indicated that the spec is 40 FOOT POUNDS on the castle nut. Unfortunately, Armalite's manual apparently has a typo and says INCH POUNDS also. I told him it was a typo and to tighten it to 38-40 foot pounds. Nope. He takes it to the gunsmith, who agrees with Armalite. He then re-torqued (if you can call 40 inch pounds torque) the castle nut to 40 inch pounds and smothered it in blue loctite. I immediately stopped caring and went back to shooting.

    Foot pounds!

I just assembled a lower receiver this evening.

40 ft-lbs of torque isn't even alot, 40 in-lbs is barely hand tight. I don't see how anyone could be that stupid.

But even with 40 in-lbs of torque, if you stake the castle nut it won't go anywhere.
Why do the loudest do the least?

Only an idiot thinks an inch-diameter fastener is measured in inch-pounds.

Please name that gunsmith so we can ridicule and avoid him.

There's a difference between being inexperienced and being ignorant.
If someone takes time out of their day to politely address a problem with your equipment for your sake it's always a good thing to heed what their saying. There's always going to be more Armalite rifles. Sound advice and experience help won't always be there.

The castle nut won't. The receiver extension will, though. Now I have to break staking on my brand new A5 because of my "eyeballing."

Nope. Page 200 says 40 inch pounds. This is likely how the whole thing got started. The newest version of this TM corrected the typo that is in fact present in the TM you linked to and now correctly states FOOT POUNDS.

Outdated and has since been corrected to say foot pounds.

Wow, took them long enough to get around to changing it then. (the 1991 was the most recent I could find readily)
Like what, 3 or 4 big revisions and who knows how many little ones LOL
