Well, I have a Syrac Gen 2 on the way to try out. My confidence in adjustable gas blocks isn't very high as the first one I tried (from another mfg) failed very quickly such that it lost the ability to hold it's adjustment. Adding more parts in a critical part of the system seems risky but I'll try to wring out the Syrac and give it a fair shake. Planning to try it out on my AP 10.5" 5.56 barreled upper or my BA 10.5" 5.45 barreled upper and see how it runs suppressed with the gas tamed down a bit.

    A question for you guys:
Assuming the adjustment of the gas block allows for turning down the gas enough to go lighter on the buffer, is the lighter buffer something you'd avoid for a weapon you want the best reliability from? Let's say you can make it run well on a standard carbine buffer or something heavier, like an H2 or H3. Obviously the gas block setting would be different, but would you choose to keep a heavier buffer? I know that personal preference in terms of feel is a factor, but I'm strictly speaking of reliability. I'd think you want to keep it on an H buffer at least, maybe an H2. Agree?

Absolutely. I tuned the H2 to the smoothest running AR in history. Go too light, and you give up some forward momentum that helps strip that next round out of the mag and seat into the chamber while snapping the extractor over the rim.

You will like the Syrac. I've run the piss out of my Gen 1 and removed it and reinstalled it for a KMR rail addition. No signs of any wear or hints that it might cause any problems anytime soon.

So I'm thinking about venturing into this wild and whacky world of adjustable blocks. I've read the entire thread and there's one thing I don't understand.

If I have a 16" middy and a 13" rail, how am I going to reach the detent and adjustment screw inside the rail?

I want to build a dedicated suppressed Recce without dropping loot on a switch block.

I had a similar idea and settled on a Barnes Precision Handguard which has cut outs to use their adjustable gas tube. works like a charm.

You just need tools long enough to reach the front of the gas block. I can't speak to the gen 1, but my gen 2 came with an extended allen key that will probably allow you to reach the adjustment screw on your upper. If it's not long enough, you can buy longer ones. The gen 2 just needs an allen key for adjustement. The gen 1 will also require that you push the detent plunger in with something else (anything long enough will work).

They Syrac comes with long as allen wrenches. But once you get a setting, you really never need to mess with it.

Understood, but I want to make sure I can at least adjust it to the correct setting.

    Edited because I'm dumb

You can adjust it. I'm running a carbine gas with a 10 rail which is about the same coverage of the block, and I adjust mine no problem.

I have a 16" midlength barrel and 12.3" rail, gas block is a SLR, not a Syrac, but both have Allen adjustment screw in front. No problem reaching with OEM wrench, easier yet to use this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002C4VBM8/...gift_hist_link
Not sure if 2mm is correct for Syrac, but pretty sure you can find the right size. Handle adds to length.
