I agree completely, building can be very addicting. Mainly because you can pick up the parts as you go and it doesn't take a big bite out of your wallet, not all at once anyhow. However; if I was going to own only one AR it would be a quality factory rifle such as Colt, BCM, or LMT. If I wanted to drop some serious coin I would buy a factory Noveske, Wilson Combat, or POF.

Like everyone else has already stated, do your homework and make a wise choice. And don't trust the gun shop owner who says "yeah this brand is just as good as the high end manufacturers and its half the price". Thast how I learned, and it sucked.

Building to me isn't putting an upper on a lower and inserting the BCG. If you decide to build you WILL NOT SAVE MONEY. My "AR" toolbox is probably worth over $1000.00 if I added up all of the small parts, tools, dooddads, and other assorted stuff. You don't have to go that far into it but there are required tools you will need. I love shooting but equally enjoy tinkering and building my rifles. Currently I've got 1 rifle that I bought complete and most of the parts ahve been replaced over the years. I very much prefer and trust my builds to factory rifles. I've also done enough that I know what I want and how to do it right.

I believe that it took me several builds to really get the feel for what I was doing and learn some of the tricks and nuances to assemble a reliable and safe weapon. Because of this I would suggest that for a first carbine buy one. If you continue with the addiction, start building.
