    Ghilly,

    A helpful technique is to solidly ground the end of your steel on your platform. You can also ground the pinkie of your striking hand and use a twisting motion to strike the steel. It will help prevent you from sending your preparations off into the dirt.

    You can also take a little bit of Vaseline on a cotton ball and it will burn for about two minutes.

    Nice thread. Quick tip: Those lil' plastic pencil sharpeners you used as a kid work really well on small twigs to create easily combustible fire starting shavings, couple that with laundry dryer lint. They weigh nothing, take up no space and work really well for the task.

    I like the sharpener idea. Very soon there will be a short vid with the making and use of the cotton ball in petro jelly.
