I'm in complete agreement with you. The story was more for the benefit of those stating that the OP's scenario had to be a negligent discharge. Just illustrating an example of an accidental discharge. Like you said, no way of knowing what went on with the OP's scenario without more information.
I've seen this happen with other 5.56 rifles. Slam fire.... although generall impossible for an AR to do this.... if debris got in the perfect spot on the bolt face or on the ammo.... it could happen.
Other than that a combo of a high seated primer and some other factor... debris in the firing pin hole or something, could have created the scenario.

Yep, that's it. Goes inside the hammer, from the bottom. Think of a ventriloquist's dummy as the hammer, and the J-spring as the ventriloquist's hand, going straight up that thing's waste-evacuation port.
It's not readily visible from the outside, so there's tons of folks that don't even know it's there. The first time I put together a lower, I would have been caught in that error if not for the fact that I had a USMC TM and a commercially-printed armorer's manual open on the table in front of me. That commercial manual saved me some trouble.
One of the uncountable "Huh, how about THAT....!?" moments we all have when learning this stuff.![]()

Really? We don't have an ammo choice as whoever is in charge decided that is the best ammo for our rifles. If I had a choice, I would like to have a magazine of the Winchester ammo for exposed human targets and a magazine of M855 on me in case they are inside a vehicle or behind a barrier. I don't trust the Winchester ammo to do well vs a vehicle, and we encounter a lot of vehicles in our urban environment...
I've got an older spring kit my dad gave me, and it was the only one that I didn't immediately recognize from the build/assembly I did. (Seems most hammers have it installed already, now.) I figured 'that looks like a J to me.'I couldn't find a pic of it in the military manual I have, which surprised me. In the 'blown apart' diagram of the lower, it only shows the hammer itself and lists it as 'hammer assembly.' I think that was the only part it didn't show with all pieces completely disassembled.
