If you know that you bought a sub-standard piece of junk, why would you keep it to "save" some money? Sell the thing, cut your losses, and run....

Selling that DPMS would be the best thing to do in this situation, as you aren't going to want to use it for spare parts (the gun is poorly made, remember?) and there is no point in keeping it if you aren't going to use it (why would you use a poorly made weapon if you have a Colt or other higher quality weapon to choose from.)

The OP is new to AR type rifles. He doesn't need two or more rifles, he needs one good rifle. Sell the DPMS, and buy a complete, high quality rifle and be done with the whole ordeal....

I have quite a bit of personal experience with various low-dollar rifles that I wasted time and money trying to improve, and can't bear to see someone else make the same mistakes that I did. Do it right, and buy a high quality rifle, and don't even mess around with junk...
But with this argument, you make it sound like after he sells the DPMS, he already has the rest of the money necessary to buy a colt or whatever. If he indeed has the money, then by all means sell and have a new top shelf AR by the end of the month. But somewhere along I gained the impression that wasnt the case and some saving will be necessary. If he can save up to buy a nicer AR, then sell the DPMS, great. If he gets part way there, then sells the DPMS to make up the rest, great. But either way he might as well use the rifle. IMO no matter what happens, when/if he sells it he is still only going to get "used" rifle money for it. I just dont see why he or anyone would want to go without an AR, but thats just me.

Just keep it. if your wife/gf, kid, or buddy want to go shooting with you bring it along and let them shoot it while you shoot your new one. nothing wrong with having 2 rifles in your gun case. as for it being a complete piece of junk, i think that is a little harsh. lower quality certainly. probably makes a great range gun if you take care of it.

    Colt > DPMS.

    DPMS > no rifle

    Especially in these interesting times.

Dont get me wrong, I suggest you get the Colt too, but since you can't afford it right now and it's your only rifle (I assume), i would keep it around while saving up for the Colt.

You might get a bit less for it trading it in a few months from now and a few hundred rounds later versus if you traded it in tommorow, but you could think of the difference as the cost you paid to have a rifle to learn on and have at hand while waiting to get the Colt.

    JMHO.

i would just keep it until i could afford something better.

    learn to shoot it

learn to take it apart and put it back together again

learn to clean it and to work on it.

then when you get something better you'll know
    more about it.

Exactly what I would do if I was in said situation.

After reading some of the replys I would just like to clarify that the DPMS fires just fine right now, but its only had 300 round put through it. Doing the research after the purchases was were I went wrong. I was asking this question because I was just worried how long this rifle will live vs say the Colt 6920. I feel a little more relieved today seeing some of the more positive posts basically saying I didnt totally screw up because I can use this one to train on for something better. We all live and learn. Thanks for the help everyone!

It probably won't last quite as long as a Colt or similar would... but the barrel is good for a solid 15K+. Anything else that breaks on it is not very expensive to replace, and many of these lesser quality rifles run fine for a long time.

What you're paying for is certainty, when you get a Colt or similar. It is unlikely you're going to have a problem until you reach exceptionally high round counts. With a DPMS, it might last just as long, or longer, than a Colt.... or the bolt might be heat treated poorly and snap after a few hundred rounds. A fire control group pin might break. The extractor may be pot metal and wear out at 1000 rounds. The gas ring could be soft and only last 500.

For now, shoot it and become proficient with the platform. Save up, get a Colt, and then just use the DPMS as a beater. Maybe use it as the basis for a varmint build, or a target rifle. It's just not a great fighting rifle- but that doesn't mean it can't fulfill other roles.

I'd save up for something better and wait to sell the DPMS till the next election comes around and the prices go up.

Yea seriously! A DPMS that goes bang everytime and puts the bullet where it needs to go is just as good a Colt or what ever.

    Colt
    Daniel Defense
    BCM
    Noveske
    LMT

When you have enough, buy the rifle of your choosing. Never put yourself in a situation were you don't have...

Going by the costs that I've seen lately, lower prices, on good quality rifles, it shouldn't be too long before you have enough for one. After that, if you decide to sell the DPMS, you will already have a rifle to replace it.

Make sure all of the mags you buy are of good quality this way you can run them straight outta the gate.
^ good advice. My first rifle was a bushy, it ran fine(still does) but as I learned about the platform and did my research I learned that there are better rifles out there. I then saved up and built a rifle using the info gleaned from this type of forum. Then I bought a complete DD and now I'm saving for a couple of colts. In less than two years I was able to parlay that info into 2 top tier rifles. If you sell it you have none. As they say here 2 is 1 and 1 is none. And None means youre screwed. Good luck.
don't even try to take my weapons away from me and my peoples...
