This was a great move for AZDPS.

At one point, they had a hodge-podge of shotguns, Bushy ARs, and some other assorted pieces. They had been pursuing a "one rifle for the whole agency" concept for a few years, and last i knew, were looking hard at one of the shorty Sig rifles with the side-folder. The idea was supposed to be that even motors could carry a rifle (which, when folded up, actually fit in the saddle bags of a Honda ST). Each Officer was to have a rifle, and it was supposed to follow them throughout their career, regardless of assignment (Highway Patrol, investigations, SWAT, etc).

It's surprising, but in a good way, that a very Sig-centric agency went with the Colt. The Sigs were kind of interesting when they sent them out to the field for T&E, but the Colts will offer much more flexibility.

Interestingly, if they pursued the same tack they were on with the Sigs, this was likely done in a revenue-neutral way, through trading in a bunch of their old shotguns, their rifle grab-bag, and a bunch of aged-out Sig pistols. Good stuff for a state (and an agency) that's pretty much otherwise broke.

The notion being that you need to be able to pick up the rifle and shoot it without booting it up, turning it on, or getting the irons in place. Not that some flip ups don't have a niche here and there.... just not on a patrol rifle.

I remember my Dad talking about the Sig rifle too.... when Colt was grinding DPS on the pricing.

There was a kid in a rifle class I took a few years back who had his Dad's DRMO M16. He said his Dad was DPS. The gun had the FCG switched out to Semi auto only parts.

Flip-ups aren't bad on a patrol rifle, as long as you have a reliable optic. Less stuff in the way when you are trying to focus on your target, what they are holding, and what they are doing. I would only ensure that they are robust flip-ups and mounted well, not something cheap and flimsy.

Thus... Eotech is out due to it's auto shut off. I tend to agree with LAV.... Irons should be fixed in the upright so you never have to do anything to employ them.

My personal opinion is that flip ups are never acceptable... but that's just for my guns.... if people run them for their needs... no sweat.

I agree with the EOTech. I have one now on my patrol rifle which has flip-ups (6940), but I am soon going to replace it with an Aimpoint due to the shutoff. I haven't had issues with battery life since I have a CR123 model, but if you forget to reactivate the sight at times, you could be screwed if it turns off after 8hrs.

I'm going to eventually buy a BCM midlength upper with a 14.5" barrel with all fixed sights and that will probably be placed on my patrol rifle. I'll just train with it a lot to get use to the irons in the way. I want to like all fixed irons through an Aimpoint, but it has bothered me when I used other people's rifles set up like that. I think I just need to force myself to get use to it

I agree. It's a lot going on with fixed irons and an RDS. Worse when the gun is absolute co witnessed.

The lower third thing seems to be less distracting though.

I keep a rear flip up on my Colt but its wearing an ACOG so it's either a flip or none at all. When I get my A4 the ACOG will go on it and the Colt will wear an Aimpoint and DD rear sight. I agree on the rear sight needing to be fixed as you never know when your optic will go down. I knew a guy in Iraq who had his M68 shot off his rifle.

Are you my clone? Not quite, but almost.

I'm currently on an M16A4 clone, with a TA31F-G mounted. MagPul flip up rear sight, and if I get a carbine (considering one) I'll be putting my DD fixed iron on it, and eventually an Aimpoint (or, maybe, an Eotech EXPS2-0).

    You, sir, have excellent tastes.

I know I'm no fan of the RDS. But I've never shot one off of a guy's gun!!

I'm starting to love those ACOGs. Stupid Pappabear has our starting distance at 300 yards these days. Those ACOGs are really nice when you're trying to hit steel at 500 yards.
