colt model sp1 early 80's model

rear peep sites seem to be same size hole regardless of which direction it is flipped in. one side of flip site has a letter L on it. what is the letter L for in reference to sighting this weapon in?

I'm curious now. Besides being marked L, how is the long range different than the other? I guess what I'm really curious about it how is it better suited or optimized for longer ranges?

the L aperture (300m-800m) is higher than the other one (0-200m) to account for bullet drop.
