best bullet for 1/7 twist barrel

I have recently purchased a dd m4v3. It has a 1/7 twist barrel. it is a 16 inch barrel. I am trying to figure out what ammo to buy in bulk. Is there a particular weight bullet that will work best in a 1/7 twist? I will do most of my shooting under 200 yards, but want ammo that will be good out to 400 yards if i should need to shoot out that far. Thanks for your help.

I would think m855 should do the trick for you. I think optimum for a 1/7 twist is something like 60-80 gr. Though it should shoot say 55 just fine.

With a 1/7 twist barrel you are able to fire and stabilize virtually all .223/5.56mm loads if I remember correctly. So buy in bulk with confidence any new factory manufactured bulk ammo like the M193 or M855 equivalent stuff. Unless you can afford the high quality ammo all the time, train with a bulk ammo and have some good stuff loaded and waiting.

You want a plinking round or HD/SD round?
What do you want to spend?

55gr or 62gr M855 will shoot well for plinking and practice.

69gr and 77gr SMK are very accurate, as well as Barnes TSX.
They are more expensive, and probably not something to buy in bulk unless you have lots of extra cash, or reload yourself.

I would just buy some M193 or any .223 55gr FMJ or M855 and practice with that. Maybe buy a few boxes of premium ammo just to see what itll do, and maybe save some for sd/hd/shtf.

Black Hills has a few nice loads with the SMK's and Barnes TSX
Hornady has the TAP T2
Privi Patizan has 69 and 75gr "Match" ammo also. Its not as accurate as the SMK/TSX ect... but its a little less expensive.

Just for your info, most folks find the M855 to be less accurate than XM193 or other FMJ rounds. Placing the steel penetrator in the lead bullet is hard to do consistently, leading to variations in ballistics from bullet to bullet. Unless you get a smoking deal on M855/SS109 ammo, or really need to penetrate body armor and steel helmets, you would be better off buying XM193 in bulk. It's typically $30-50 less per 1000rds.

thank you for the info, i was going this route simply because i was under the assumption that the heavier bullet would stablize better. but you have made a good point with putting the steel penetrator in and not being able to do it perfectly every time will make it not as consistent

There is no best bullet for the 1/7 twist. There is only what generally works. What your question really is, what bullet will work best in your barrel? The only way to determine that is to buy a box or two of the ammo that meets your needs and shoot it to see if it performs as desired
