I know next to nothing about compensators other than they reduce muzzle rise, which is my goal.
I would like one with a balance of muzzle rise reduction and flash suppression if such an animal exists.
What do you folks recommend?

What is your best aggregate time for a clean run on a 1/2 and 1/2 Drill?
Have you had any formal instruction regarding your stance and grip - meaning recoil management techniques?
How fast have you truly shot your AR accurately?
For what you're looking for the Battle Comp series is a good place to start looking. It's flash reduction is around that of an A2 flash hider and its compensation properties are pretty impressive as well.

I have not been to any classes other than the Marine Corps. And what they teach has nothing to do with this kind of shooting.
I have been watching tons of videos and have done what I can to mimic what I am seeing there. I have noticed quite a difference while using the support hand with the thumb over the muzzle technique.
I have not actually timed myself but have seen quite an improvement using the above technique.
I live in Illinois and have not yet seen a class near here that I could attend. (This State isn't known for it's gun friendly politics. So I imagine not many instructors want to come here.)

Not that Battlecomp doesn't make a good product, but your money may currently be better spent on 500 rounds of ammo and some drills to help you gauge your recoil control.
I do a lot of shooting. Most has been with pistols. I used to compete years ago in IPSC and PPC and a few IDPA matches.
I have no problem putting in the time and the practice. I shoot on my own property anytime I like. I do realize proper technique is very important but I also realize equipment will give you an edge as well. I am not trying to supplement equipment for technique.
As I said earlier the only opportunity for instruction I have is videos. I have picked up Magpul Dynamics Art of The Carbine and have been running drills off of those videos.
My old Pact timer bit it so I am going to pick up another one soon. I will then be able to actually time myself.
