What rifle/carbine did you get? Also, lots of factors come in to play with sights.. 8) Ron[/QUOTE]

Lol yup I knew this question would come up too!! And let the bashing begin.

Let me start by Sayin I will not be goin into battle, it is strictly recreational shooting weapon. Range, maybe occasional hunting and home defense/ SHTF
I picked up from a friend who was down on his luck a NIB DPMS .223, case, 4 mags, and 300 rds ammo for $500 bucks.

I am already looking to upgrade the bolt carrier group and upgrade the buffer ASAP

Question for you, by range gun I am assuming you mean just shooting from a static bench position? Please keep in mind that there is a worlds difference between a range beater and a HD / SHTF rifle.

If its just a range beater, then go to wally world and pick up an optic from there and be done with it. Hell, just skip the BCG and buffer expense while you are at it.

However if it might ever just possibly kinda sort-a maybe need to serve as a HD / SHTF rifle, then yeah, put your pennies into the optic jar and save save save. In fact you will need to save a lot more for other items, but those areas should be addressed in the AR General Discussion forum and training forums.

NAH.. I shoot for fun.. That's all I need a AR for. I have one for indoors and one for outdoors.. The outdoor flat-top variant has the Nikon 1X4 and the indoor 9mm is an A2. I've been shooting the carry handle sights on the 9mm, but I'm thinking about a ARMS #39 mount to play with. Age and sight come into play as well. I don't see the peeps like I once did.. LOL..

SO! Are you looking at 25m and/or indoor shooting or outdoor 50m+ and do you have old eyes?.. Ron

You really need to narrow down what you intend to use this rifle for. You can't say that it will "strictly" be for recreation, and then immediately in the next sentence say that home defense is another potential use. Which is it? Is it both?

If the rifle will be employed in any kind of self defense capacity, then you need to save your money. If you can actually afford an AR15, ammo, etc. then you can afford a more expensive optic that won't go tits up when you need it.

Speaking hypothetically and using arbitrary percentages for the sake of argument, let's say the rifle will be 90% recreation 10% self defense. The 10% should be what's driving your purchasing decisions regardless of the fact that it's going to be seeing less use in that capacity. Especially since a rifle set up for the latter will be more than capable of doing the former. The reverse won't necessarily be the case.

I think you are in the wrong forum.
Threads like this are not taken very well here.
AR15.com may be a better forum for the advice you seek.

Keep the carbine as a range toy, it is not suitable for home defense.
Learn how it shoots, the function, controls, holdovers, etc.
When the time comes to buy a quality carbine, look towards proven company with proven track records.

    Good luck to you OP.

Threads like what? Asking for people's opinions? I took the advise and am looking at irons. I'm learning my weapon, how to clean ,shoot and make it reliable. But because it's not a $1000 AR your telling me it's a range toy?

Listen to people with experience, don't be so reactionary.
This forum is not geared to hobby guns and range plinkers.
It is geared toward LE/Mil, serious hard use guns.
It is what it is, you can either accept that, or you won't.

There are many sticky threads at the top of this forum.
    Read them all.
Run a forum search of DPMS and read the search results.
Your carbine is not suitable for home defense.
There are many members on this board who will not trust their life with your new rifle.

    Thanks in advance
After purchasing a quality AR, I have stuck to iron sites until such a time I have both the funds and basics of the iron sites solid, before adding an RDS. I suspect that will be the the advice you are given here. Take it.

Cutting corners on ARs and or anything that may be added to the platform, not going to get love here at M4C.
