New tool idea for dimpling barrels for set screwed low pro gas blocks

I posted this on TOS but I figured I would get some good input here as well.

    Link to TOS thread

    update 1/24 pics

Installed on barrel, centered with pointed set screw on gasport

    Soft point screw installed

    Into vise, ready to drill.

Dimples started using jig, jig moved back to expose dimples, using soft point set screw to hold jig.

Enlarge dimples to full 11/64" diameter, deburr with file

    Install gas block.

    Demand depends on price.

At $30 you will sell a lot of them, at $60 most hobbists won't buy them so you ruled out a large part of the market.

How many different low profile gas blocks share the same screw hole dimensions/location? Will this work with a LaRue gas block, VLTOR gas block, Noveske, etc. ?

    Looks good so far!!

I based it off the LaRue and Vltor. The Noveske is a Vltor so that's not an issue. I assume the others are the same since some high end barrels come pre dimpled.

I've seen some gas blocks that don't allow for the handguard cap.

    That's what SHE said...

Does a regular drill bit make the right "shape" of dimple for a set screw or is there an ideal mill bit that is used when dimpling barrels at the factory?

Drill bits are for making clean holes, not dimples. From my experience, you can get a dimple that isn't the same depth at every point on any given circle centered on the dimple.

Maybe off subject, but some of you might not know to do this. When tightening set screws on anything, torque it down, then back it off and torque it down again, as the 2nd time you will get more of a bite on the metal. It will hold better.

One a gas block, I'd still pin it.

Standard drills are 118 degree point, the set screws are 90 degree.

I see your points, I'm not sure how big of an issue it is. The idea of the tool was to locate the holes and align the gas port. I've never had a problem with a standard drill. A ball end mill may also work.
