The M16 grew out of studies that most infantry combat took place at less than 300 meters and you didn't need the longer range of the .30-06 or .308. You just needed to control the infantryman's half kilometer which became 460 meters. And add to that the need for a fully automatic weapon. Now enter Eugene Stoner and the AR15 is born just in time for Vietnam. I won't go into the teething troubles the M14 had and the rise of McNamara and his whiz kids. Of course the M-16 rollout went without a hitch.
I do believe that just about every poster in this thread has said AR > M-14. Just an observation......
