SR-15 MOD 2:
Nice stick.
I just mounted an Aimpoint Comp M5 on my 16” SR-15 Mod 2 with a Geissele mount (lower 1/3). Took the Nightforce 1-4X24 off for now. I also mounted a closed tine Surefire Warcomp just to try out.
Hit the range this evening for a 50/200 zero.
I continue to be pleased with the SR-15. Even using IMI M855 62gr ammunition, which isn’t exactly known as being match grade the combo still held the black on B8 out to 200 yards off a rest. Hornady 62gr FMJ, and IMI 77gr SMK loads did quite a bit better but shooting groups at 200 yards on paper with a non magnified 2 MOA red dot is not ideal.
As per my previous experience with this particular carbine, once zeroed different loads in the 62gr-77gr range seem to print POA=POI with a 50/200 zero or at least so close I’m not going to lose any sleep. Essentially the couple of different loads I shot this evening were under or at the periphery of the dot. I haven’t encountered any bulk M855 that can consistently deliver much more than 3 MOA, and usually it’s closer to 4 MOA. At 200 yards a 2 MOA dot is covering a smidge over 4” and isn’t a precision oriented optic.
For experimental purposes I put in an H buffer to compare the IMI M855 with the standard SR-15 buffer. Ran a few magazines back to back with each buffer. The magazine is an ancient Colt 20 round box with an aluminum follower, and a spring that probably needs to be replaced. If the bolt carrier is moving too fast this out of all my magazines will show problems feeding and locking back on an empty magazine. Both the standard SR-15 buffer and the H buffer gave reliable performance and lock back. The H buffer was smoother with the notoriously hot IMI M855, but the standard buffer wasn’t unmanageable, ejection was still to 3-o’-clock (I know it’s not the end all be all), and brass wasn’t dinged up or otherwise marred.
Since I run almost exclusively 5.56MM NATO I may buy an H buffer and start running that full time.
At some point I need to buy a 14.5” SR-15 or shorter upper and put the Aimpoint on it, and go back to a magnified optic on the 16” SR-15.
