I never had a stock SL8 but if it's flimsy, you did the right thing. I remember the crappy commercial bipods HK sold with their 91/93 series where the feet always broke off. I assumed bipod was a Harris, if not replacing it is a good move. Sounds like you have everything well thought out.
It's a shame the sling stud on the HK forearm is cheap, it really is a sleek look.

I don't know if I would rather have an "UMP" in grey or the older G36(SL8). The SL8s seem to have climbed in price the past few years and the USCs have stayed around $1500. But an older grey SL turned into a "G36K" would be awesome.
Is H&K still making the USC? I think they quit within the last few years.
I've read the commercial 91/93 were bad but weren't those contract bipods as well? I had a German bipod and it was a total boat anchor.
You'll have to file some material off the top, every one I've owned was incredibly tight. The preferred method to remove the mag is with the paddle and you'll have to really yank the mag out.
Not sure really. The ones sold by HK at the time were the lightweight bipod. They were hollow metal tube with plastic feet that almost immediately broke off. You can usually spot them because they are often covered in superglue where somebody tried to repair them.
The NATO bipod is the one you want, heavy duty solid steel one piece legs. For a time they were $29.95 or some absurdly cheap price from CDNN years and years ago. I don't even think such a bipod was available by special order in the early 80s and if it was it would have probably cost $200 just like the ARMS mount. Of course years later you could get a genuine STANAG mount WITH a Hendsoldt Z1 scope for $200.
The flood of G3 parts and accessories after Germany switched to the G36 still amazes me. Back in 1983 I think I was paying $30 a magazine for G3 mags, the idea that 30 years later I would buy the same thing for $1 is just astonishing to me.
Military surplus is an amazing thing, I can still remember buying surplus 5.56 and paying about $75 for 1000 rounds, 7.62 was more expensive and could cost as much as $85 for 1000 rounds.

I wasn't planning on buying one and don't really care for neutered rifles, but PSA has SL8's for $1,000, so I bought one. The odd thing is that the model number is 81000989 which isn't found on H&K's website or anywhere else on the internet for that matter.
When Tommy Built does a magazine conversion, do it really look good? It just seems like getting the plastic between the ejection port and magazine well to look right would be near impossible.
