I never tire of seeing a phone picture of somebody's "inherited" Thompson with 18" barrel that their "grandfather" brought back from WWII.

Also I recently learned that ALL triangular handguard SP1 rifles are M-16s regardless of the fact that they might be marked "AR-15" or anything like that.
It's hard to be a ACLU hating, philosophically Libertarian, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, scientifically grounded, agnostic, porn admiring gun owner who believes in self determination.

    Chuck, we miss ya man.

Well, technically they are almost entirely actual M16 parts & all the M16s’ before the A1 were marked AR-15. Before 1967 you could still find auto-sears in the SP1. I’ve been looking for a shooter since I was 14.

SP1's have large screw receivers so even from the starting point they are not M-16s.

Read “almost”. Except for those holes they’re still the same spec as a Colt 602 upper.

I don’t believe any SP1 ever had an autosear from the factory. Lots of AR15 marked transferable fullauto Colts (I have a 614), but no SP1 were made fullauto from Hartford.

Also, the front takedown is standard AR15/M16 diameter on the 601, not the larger size of the SP1. This can be seen in this thread:

Some slipped through by accident and incompetence, also some were intentional and designed for sale to foreign governments but I believe those were given special rollmarks afterward.

Do you have any proof to corroborate this? I’ve been a student of Colt ARs and M16s since the early 90s, spoken with and followed (on forums like subguns) many whom I would consider to be experts on Colt. Guys like Dan Shea, Dennis Todd, Tony K, among others. To a man they have all said that there were no factory select fire SP1s. This used to come up a few times a year when someone would post a converted select fire SP1 and the seller claimed that the SP1 was converted by Colt. I have seen AR15 marked select fire guns that had no additional model marking above the serial number and were in 603 configuration.

Exactly the reason I avoid gun shops and gun conversation in general like the plague.

It was on Arfcom about 5 years ago, I’ve looked for the thread already with no luck.

I think one of the men responsible for the A2 changes was there.
