It's what forensic scientists call gunshot residue. Lead, antimony, and barium, plus some other things, from the primeers.


Also gunking up your action is Copper alloy from the bullet jackets. Soot from burned powder, and particles of partially burned powder. Brass dust from the action working on the cases.

They have their quirks, but much less an issue for far fewer shooters than usually discussed.

I go through training ammo fairly quickly... how long are we talking?

At one point alot of training ammo containing lead free primers was labeled "use within 5 years".

Obviously not an issue when you're using it up quick.

I wouldn't want to have to think about it.

Just pulled some .40 the other day to run a few drills, and they were loaded when GWB was president. Alot of my reloading gets put away like that.
